Finally made it..

I just joined the AMG club yesterday! Purchased a Black on Black 2002 E55 w 58k on the clock!! Man this thing is fun to drive! Pics will follow as soon as I get my camera back.

One question though: if you have the car in 1st with the ESP off and you smash the gas pedal how long of a tire streak should you leave? The dealer put new Toyo's on it, but I can't peel out for ****e. I thought this car was supposed to melt tires?

Anyway, thanks to all the fellow enthusiasts on here that influenced my decision to pick up one hell of a car. My commute to work on Monday can't come fast enough!!!

Best method for laying rubber

I have never seen one do more than chirp the tires from a stand still just by mashing the gas. It has the power but ESP is never fully defeated. From what I understand there was a lawsuit in germany when Mercedes was implementing ASR on the 190E 16vs, one of those darwin award types apparently wrecked one on test drive and said the car acted incorrectly with it disabled. So mercedes said, so we never get sued again we will make ASR undefeatable, then that carried on into ESP. Long story shot its a liability thing, and its pretty annoying. this car without ESP and 6 speed manual would have walked all over the M5.

But... If you come to a dead stop put your left foot on the brake and rev it up to 4k just as the tires start spinning let go of the brake and mash the gas, you'll leave quite an impression on anyone watching, Usually I can get about 40 ft and smoke out anyone within 50 feet. Give it a try. you'll giggle like a school girl.

I'm getting new PS2s next week and have been, um, disposing of my remaining rubber for the last few weeks. I've had no problems from a standstill (OK maybe it's a near standstill) with the ESP off. With a one-leg diff it's not nearly as fun or violent as my big block cars with limited slip. I should sell a Ford (I have six) and pop for a SC and a Quaife ... or a W211.

Thats what I'm talking about. I will try this eventually. Unfortunately, I will not be driving the E55 for at least 1 month, as that's the earliest I could get an appoinment at Premier for a ClearBra. The 2nd day I had the whip, I took it up to 155 and I can now see what bugs do to paint at that speed. Black car + 155mph + bugs = CRATERS!!! Will get the paint touched up first, then the bar...3-4 friggin weeks...arrgh!

Congrats on the new ride! I was able to spin the wheels up to 5000RPM in first gear for a few seconds with ESP off and just smashing the throttle.

Welcome SleepersRock!

Good choice. I've had mine since May and I just can't get enough.

Hey Jimmy, Are you sure you don't work for Sprintbooster on the side? HaHa

I still don't know if it will make a differance for me with the Powerchip?

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Hey Adam, I live in San Jo and will be at Premire in Fremont for a ClearBra appointment on Friday. Is your shop near by? I've only heard good things about you on this website and would love to stop by and see what mods you got for the 210s. I for sure want a more aggressive exhaust at least.

I am curious what the car cost you. I have a 01 E55 black on black with 58,000 with Starmark and all services up to date. I want to sell it.

Thanks.

Thanks.
I bought my Black on Black 02 for $27K with 59K on the clock. It was in immaculate condition as far as paint and interior. Engine and underbody all were strong, no leaks of any kind. A/C needed to be recharged, B service was due in about 1000 miles. Had new Toyo Proxies and a good looking tint. All stock other than that. I think I also have every option on it other than the ventilated seats which I would have paid a premium for. No warranty on mine, so that may add you a few extra dollars as I would have paid more for mine if it had a warranty.

A picky buyer may notice/argue/negotiate price if an instrument cluster has missing pixels. I did have missing pixels, but I knew I could get the cluster replaced by friend at MB.

Hope this helps.

The instrument cluster by itself won't cost you an arm and a leg.... I replaced mine years ago.... the part cost me $300.... but the labor was $900

If you were about 2 months faster, you could've gotten mine for a lot less

zoink, what do you mean by labor being $900 bucks!!! All you have to do is use a pair of the Mercedes cluster removal tools or if one is cheap, can make them out of wire hangers, stick them in just behind the cluster on the right and left and yank it out. The new cluster goes right in with just a little push and you're done!

Yes, but they had to do "version coding" plus input the mileage. It should be very simple (like plugging a PDA or computer or may be just do a bunch of button pressing )... so I know the dealer ripped me off... but what can I do? If you replace it yourself, how do you put the current mileage to the new one, let alone the "version coding"?

Well, I guess if you don't know anyone locally to do it then I guess you have to pay. One of the mechanics over at our local MB dealer recommended this guy who can input your current mileage and update the cluster to your vehicle for like $250 bucks and for another $150 bucks fix the out pixels. If you wanted pixels fixed only I think it's like $300 or something...
