Yes it can. So can bad sparkplugs and wires. A bad MAF will hurt alot too.

It's an item that should be part of regular maintenance if you are not sure if it has been done. Sometimes when they go bad the Engine chk light comes on and sometimes it does not which happened to me. Tested it too with Star diagnostic and it showed the thing to operate in the proper range and the car still did not feel right to me. I decided to chg it and it woke the car right up. Do a search on MAF and you will see many posts on this little iten which can cause major powerloss on our MB's. It's very very common.

I own a 1999 W210 Mercedes.
Definately
You will definately feel powerloss and maybe even a bit of hesitation in the vehicle. Replace immediately if you havent done it. A bad or dirty MAF can also bring you issues. Automotive stores usually have MAF sensor cleaners in spray form. If you clean it once in a while you can avoid having to replace it as quick. In any event do the tune-up on the vehicle. Take care.
