Mod on MAS Sensor worth 10+ HP??
Has anyone tried this mod on their E55? You take the square net out of the top the MAS sensor? I here it gives you 10+ HP

Another MB owner told me this today, and I did not see how this was true. Yes I felt the same way as you guys! But I had to ask. Thanks for not LOL

I posted over at W211 and this is what they said!

First thing I did to my 91 fox body mustang back in the day, along with removing the airbox silencer. The car went 14.30's with just those mods, those were the days.

Back about a Yearago. GTA 23109a was kind enough to give me this descreening Tip & Rflow 306 confirmed it . I say It works quite well , with no bad side effects at all . I sware it was worth a free 7 hp !! Give it a try
Please see attach Picture

That's a no brainer. Definitely take the screens out.

Using a late model Mustang for an example (I have owned four), removing the air silencer will increase the air intake by as much as 50%. And, removing the MAF screen will increase the volume of air to the MAF sensor. The final result being an increase of ~5 HP by way of air silencer removal, and an increase of throttle response (0 HP) by way of MAF screen removal. Add an K&N filter to the equation, and you may see an additional ~4-6 HP for a total of ~ 10HP. The point being that removing the screen alone will not produce an increase in HP, but a definite increase to the butt-o-meter by way of throttle response. Note: removing the MAF screen on any vehicle may play havoc with your MAF sensor by way of irregular air flow to the sensor. The most common example of this is the vehicle may stall when coming to a stop when it has reached it's optimum running temperature. The screen(s) is designed to be there for a reason. I will admit that I would be tempted to remove not one, but both, MAF screens on our E55s if I were in a 1/4 mile drag situation. But, for daily driving...nope. just my two cents

You make a good point. I removed my MAS sensor and it only has the plastic on top the bottom is open? So it looks like it's there to keep things from falling in your intake during repairs or filter changes. I see the guys that moded there kept the middle part 3 square rows in over the sensor. Other MAS sensors I've seen from like FORD, Toyota, etc. have metal mesh over both ends. So you think it will run bad for daily driver? Have you tried this before?

the black plastic grid is part of the design of the Bosch maf,s
I don't believe that it is there just to stop anything entering the intake as there is also another wire mesh on some Bosch air flow meters as well
It could be there to straighten out turbulent air before the sensor so that the maf can get a proper reading of the air flow

I've been there, done that and it makes no real difference.
Get rid of the airbox and get the Renntech box or even better ,follow the Snorkel mod that Mbenzman did to his CLK55 and W211E55 and you'll certainly feel a difference.

The one in the picture i think would suck in hot air at low speed but once moving there should be enough cold air coming through the grill and the gaps for the original air intakes.
but i would like to have some sort of heat shield in place with the headers being just below where the filters are

M113 S/C airboxes won't fit without a bit of cutting :-(
Pretty good deal on the air boxes though... costs about $400 new for what's pictured. If you were going to do this, you'd also probably want the engine cover too. When I looked it was $124.80 for the cover new from dealer.
Some more reading about 'cold-air' intakes:

I chg my tune here. I removed the screen out of the air mass sensor hsing and I do get better throttle tesponse with no prob at idle. It appears to be a good mod especially since I removed the AMG airbox and am now using a modified CLK320 setup reccommended by Mbenzman! I don't think I'd reccommend this mass air mod if u r using the factory AMG box.

I do plan on removing the metal screen in the airbox over the MAF opening, seems redundant since it's after the filters and I've never seen any debris in that part of the airbox anyway.
