observations and issues

So I drove my new E55 home from Los Angeles this past Sunday. After I had the car inspected it needed a bit of work. $2000 dollars later I have new rear brakes, new valve cover gaskets (both were leaking), new control arm bushings, new spark plugs. I'll be getting new tires very soon as they are all bald.

During my drive I noticed the headliner rattles in the rear of the car. Is there anyway to drop the headliner so I can see what is going on. Also, the rear headrest squeaks badly on the passenger side. They are both minor annoyances.

Another thing, when I am driving on the highway at 55-60 and accelerate lightly, there is a very audible humming sound. Doesn't happen all the time, but since I was using the cruise contol and accelerating using the cruise control stick I kept noticing the sound. Could it be the exhaust?

Other than that the car runs great and I got 25mpg on my 430 mile trip going 75-80mph most of the way. I detailed the car when I got home and wow, what a beautiful car. I am thrilled to have it.

Sunroof rattle

Gratz! Think if you do a search you'll find a fix for the headliner rattle (something about stuffing some folded cloth or equivalent) - sorry but I forget which forum it was in. Looks like you got a good deal to get all that work done for 2K. Enjoy your beast. This link may help if it's what I'm thinking it might be: https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...hlight=sunroof

I will take pics when I get my digital camera back today.

I was able to fix the headliner rattle and it sounds so much better. Thanks for the info. Now I am still looking for a solution for the headrest in the rear.

Also, does anyone else have a humming sounds when accelerating from 55-60 after crusing at that speed. I noticed it again last night on my way home from work. It's very loud and noticeable and hope it's not an indication of something very wrong.

Congrats and welcome to the AMG fam! I removed the resonator and added an X-pipe so my exhaust is louder, especially when I accelerate. I don't know if I would call in a "hum" though but if it is your exhaust, you'll hear it every time you accelerate and not only between 55-60mph. Hmmm...

It doesn't happen all the time. I have tested different speeds and it seems to happen from 55-60 after you've been cruising for that way for a bit. This is how it happens.

Set Cruise control to 55.
Drive for a while
Accelerate using the cruise control stalk
then you hear the noise for 5 or so seconds and it goes away.

I have noticed this exact same thing, except I notice it when nudging the gas pedal slightly. Its hard to replicate, but I have noticed that it seems more pronounced on inclines.

Could this be a drive train issue?

I have no clue, but it's nice to know you have experienced the problem. If it's not big deal then I don't need to worry.

Nice knechtea! Are you at stock height because you need to slightly lower this bad boy. I haven't installed my new springs and shocks yet but I did put #1 spring pads in with the stock suspension and it made a significant difference...

Yes I haven't changed anything. I still need new tires and then I will have to sit for a bit since that will be about $3000 total after repairs and maintenance.

If you rent or purchase a spring compressor, you can do it yourself for practically nothing. The spring compressor is only a couple hundred bucks to buy or maybe rent one for like $20-30 bucks and the pads are about $7-8 bucks each. If you rented one and bought the pads you would be at about $60 bucks and would have a better stance. I know you can't really tell by the pic in my sig but that's what I did for now. I'll try to take some side pics this weekend...

I was thinking of doing the #1 spring pads with stock springs is the ride better in corners or the same? That will be great to see side views of your car with the pads installed.

How do you like the AMS pulley now that you had it on for a few weeks?

I thought I had fixed my headliner, but I was wrong. After a couple of hours of trying to no avail, I gave up for tonight. My rattle sounds like it's coming from the middle of the headliner near the rear. If my understanding is correct, the cloths to fix rattle should go in the sides of the metal support. How does that fix the middle?

Yeah, it handles much better and is more responsive without being too low for the time being. I love my AMS pulley and the car is pulling harder than ever without any issues. This pulley is designed very well and I've wanted to do a quick write up about it in here but waiting to get the dyno first. I am going to try and dyno the car tomorrow and when I do, I'll do the write up and post the results. I can't wait!

Can you post a How To with all the steps on your install of the pulley as well? How hard was it to remove the factory pulley? Thanks

Regarding the humming sound coming from the rear, I had the same condition. It became louder as I went faster and then would go away when stopped. Long story short it was the rear wheel bearings. They went bad. Had them replaced and problem solved. Hope that helps....

Did the humming sound happen at every tire rotation?
