2000 E55 AMG - Hard to work on?
Hi guys,
I'm normally a BMW guy but I'm looking into buying a 2000 E55 AMG that is for sale in my area. I'm a really hands on person and like to do a lot of car work on my own, and I was wondering if these cars are fairly easy to work with. I haven't had much trouble working on BMWs at all, but I'm unfamiliar with MBs. If you guys have any other advice for me too I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

2001 E55
So far I've done:
-2 sets of brakes + rotors
-S/S brake lines + flush system
-shocks replaced/moved around car 4 times
-springs out 3 times
-lower front ball joints
-lower front control arms
All in my garage at home with a floor jack and hand tools. Yes the electronics are complicated but for the majority of regular mechanical maintenance these cars are very easy to work on if you have some experience.

Welcome to the fam boys! To answer Roybotnik's question, they are not difficult to work on at all; especially if you're a member of the MB forums like this one. We have all done one thing or another on our cars in here and a lot of us have instructions, tips and take pics of the mods that we do. These are also easy to service yourself as well since you say your hands on so you shouldn't have any issues working on your car. Go out and get one of these and hurry back with some pics and future mods!

Thanks fellas. Your forum was very helpful to me during the decision making and buying process.
I hope I can contribute some good information as time goes by.

I'm a previous BMW owner myself. I use to have a 97 & 99 M3 coupe & 98 M3 sedan. I work on the suspension and brake systems myself. Brake system on BMW are the same as MBZ, suspension are much easier than BMW. BMW front suspension are strut and coil combo. Rear are the same as MBZ. Everything else seen the same like oil, transmission & rear axel fluid change. If you can work on BMW than MBZ shouldn't be a problem.
FYI, I own 3 BMW M3 and never had any serious problem. worst thing was a bad ignation coil on my 99, which was replaced under warranty. My E55 seen to have more common problem seen in E55 i.e. missing pixal in cluster, squeaky sound in stering wheel, motor mount, & crank sensor to name a fews. I'm sure there other common problem which I will fine out soon.
My next MBZ will be newer E55 or E63. Love the car and power but hate the problem that come with it

Yes, now I just hope the seller will follow through . I won it on ebay last night and the reserve was 18k, which I reached in the last 30 seconds of the auction. I was amazed. The carfax is clean and the car is only about an hour away from where I live. The seller says he's got all the maintenance records for it as well as all the manuals, there are no signs of rust, and everything works properly. I hope this works out, because these cars seem pretty awesome .

also, that's a very good price, esp if the low mileage and have all the records.
btw, i did notice recently that edmunds has 1999-2001 E55s priced mid to high teens vs. 2002 which is much low to mid-$20k's.

Smoking deal at $18k for 2000 with 56k miles, especially if it's Designo!!! If the leather is brown then it is Designo and I can't wait to see it! Hurry up and pick this bad boy up, don't forget to take the camera with you! Btw Roy, where are you from? You city isn't listed in your sig. I'm curious because of the deal you got and wondering if it's because of where you're located as well.

Yup, it is a Designo. Is there anything else different aside from the color combo? It has a wooden steering wheel, haha. I didn't see that on the others listed online. I was going to get the car today but there are some scheduling issues. I should definitely have it tomorrow. I'll make sure to post pics =).
PS - I'm in the Washington DC area. The car was for sale in Maryland.

Hehe, I'll take my chances. I don't mind paying for repairs as long as they don't have to be re-repaired. It couldn't be any worse than all the work I did on my 325is (it was a beater when I bought it).

I wouldn't be afraid of any of these W210's as long as they're well maintained. I mean my 97 E420 had 140,000+ miles on it when I sold it and it ran better than new! It didn't have any creaks, bumps, scratches, nothing wrong and the paint was like new! Good luck and hurry up with the pics will ya?!!!

did that car came with Navigation? I almost bought E55 yesterday, but without navigation stopped me from doing this. Also, I checked couple of cars and one of them had five owners previously. Don't you think thats too much for a 5 years old car? Record looks clean by carfax, but still.
but again, I am not in rush. I can wait 3-4 months till I get my dream E55, 01-02, around 50k or less, black on black with navigations. Is it even possible so find it ?

Haha, it's all good. I'll just ebay them once I get it. The guy selling the car seems like a pretty good guy and has kept me up to date on everything. The car is coming tomorrow on a flatbed to my house, free of charge. Pretty awesome .
