Looking to Buy...

Hello all,

After searching the forum I feel it is necessary to ask for some opinions.

I am looking for a 2000-2002 E55 for right around $20k with under 75k miles. My intention is to keep the E55 for as many as 3 years with relatively no mechanical problems. Regular maintenance is expected.

I have been shopping around the Portland area (Oregon) and have come across a few I think might fit.

The one I have a question on is a 2001. Test drove it on my own and fully inspected. Mechanically, the car runs flawless, I even pushed it a little. I will definitely be taking it to a MB dealership to test before I consider dealing. Visually, there are a few things I wish to bring forth in hopes of an opinion.

Aside from the normal wear and tear of a car that is 7 years old, I noted some small chips/scratches of paint missing from the lower portions between front and rear wheels. Also, the drivers side headrest leather come un-sewn. On the front windshield, the rubber seal on the bottom has dried out and has begun to crack. Side-note: it looks like someone tried to remove the MB signature sticker on the lower passenger side of the windshield, but only got it 1/3 off.

Under the hood, the engine looks flawless except for a cracked cap on one of the reservoirs. Furthermore, the tires need to be replaced.

Here is a link to the car itself:

A little about this dealer: All cars come from the Bay Area of California. The owner is the only salesman, with a few other staff to deal with paperwork, lot attendance, and washing/waxing. Cars are brought in, shined up, and resold. The owner does not put any extra money into the car, hence the reason he hasn't fixed the paint chips, the reservoir cap, or the headrest.

What do you think of this car? The price is $16,995. What do you think would be a more accurate selling price? Offer price from me? Until it is ran through a dealer test I'm not even going to offer, I just want to make sure it will be worth my time to pursue it further.

Opinions?

I'm more than willing to look for something that has been prepped for sale better, but am wondering if this is my opportunity for a great deal on an amazing line of automobiles.

$16,995 is a great price-point. It appears that the only issues are cosmetic. If the vehicle is mechanically sound I would consider the purchase. On a side note, if an E55 owner maintains his/her vehicle cosmetically, the chances are greater that the vehicle was also maintained mechanically. Good luck.

Those are cosmetic issues, and not that serious: the cowl screens/covers (most have cracked rubber seals on the windshield by now) are sold as left and right pieces @ approx $20 each at the MB dealership and VERY easy to install. Headrest leather can be taken care of by your local auto upholstery shop if you want a professional job. The chips/scratches can obviously be done by you or your local body shop or PDR man. The MB sticker can easily be reordered or even found on ebay...

Maybe you can negotiate for a better deal??

And as a reference or rough guide, here's my sweet deal of the month just this past April. I posted this on another thread but here it goes FYI: "I saw a 2001 E55 AMG with 60k miles & very clean at MB of Palm Beach in early March for $26k... so 2 weeks later it was on sale for $22k...then 2 more weeks later it was $19k... and 2 weeks after that it was $18k... and fast forward to last weekend, they had it on the lot for a blowout sale of $16.5k...

Turned out it was a trade-back-in (since it was purchased new there back in '01) by an old couple for a new S550, and the dealer was willing to sell-it-off for a tad below the current wholesale rate (and way below their trade-in back in March) just to finally move it... (many highline dealers don't like to keep the same car on the lot for more than 30-45 days) and they even advertised it in the local papers and on the web.

Low & behold, I walked in (after monitoring this particular car for more than 6 weeks), and after a long test drive, a thorough combover, a chat with their service dept to view the service history (since it was serviced there too)... and approx 2 hours later I drove off in it after shelling out $16k & change "out the door". So basically, before taxes & tags, I scooped up this pristine E55 for exactly $15k... not too shabby IMO.
"

Good luck!
