MAF Seal?
In the process of changing my plugs and air filter I noticed that there aren't really any clamps that ensure an air tight seal around the MAF. On E55's is the seal only dependent on the two rubber gaskets?
I know when I took everything apart it was evident that there was some leakage. There was quite a bit of dust particles in the MAF and the intake boot.

it clips to the firewall and seals to the air box thru rubber ring that is attached to the unit itself

Thought I'd share what I found the problem to be.
The rubber seals/gaskets eventually start to harden and lose its sealing ability. My car only has about 45k on it and the gaskets were shot. The old gaskets allow air to seep inside affecting the MAF's performance. Maybe negligible but still not operating 100%.
The new gaskets form an incredibly tight seal between the MAF and whatever connects to it. To me, still a flawed design because eventually the seal goes bad compared to connections that use a clamp. Even when the rubber gets old and stiff there's still no air leakage.
Another side effect on poor sealing is letting in dust which would otherwise be stopped by the filters. Does not make for a happy engine.![Frown](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
I'd almost consider this a maintenance item when changing your air filters, or maybe every other time you change the filters.
