does our car need hydraulic fluid for the steering? where is it located ? thanks!
i want to make sure if what i did is the right thing cause im thinking that the fluid i need is ps fluid and not hydraulic fluid the place where i checked it is a black square box like canister with a hose under it, its near the engine oil cap.just right below where we fill the engine oil.. is it for ps fluid or hydraulic fluid?? thanks! the cap has a dipstick like the say two kinds of level one 20c min and max and one 80c min and max.... is it the ps fluid canister or hydraulic fluid canister? thanks so much!!

I have the same question, and i dont have the manual.
I had a leak in the hydraulic pipe which was replaced today, on a regular workshop, i went over to the MB dealer to get the correct oil, the label on the tank says 001 989 2003, but the oil they claimed was right and sold me said 001 989 260310 and its labelled transmission fluid.
Did they sell me the wrong oil, or do MB use transmission oils in both transmissions and power steering/self levelling systems?
If they sold me the wrong oil, i feel its reasonable they drain it and refill it with the correct at their own costs, what you do you guys think, and if its inncorect, can i drive until monday with that oil?
Thx, Chris

Ooooooowwwww come oooonnn guys!!the power steering can use any hidraulic ATF oil you only need an oil that the specify "not f**k them up your rack & pinion sealant elements"!! ALL W210 can use the Mobil 1 ATF Fully Syntetic to protect the aluminium interior in the power steering pump! but you can use Any ATF red/white oil. (White is not recommended for hot seasons in my country) The M1 systetic atf is recommended by lots of dealers here..
If you like the MB Genuine bottle to say you use only GENUINE parts you can purchase them in a local dealer : 001 989 20 03 (I think not have replacemment number, but your local dealer can tell you, (the bottle says ZH-M Hidraulic units) is the same for the ABC & hidraulic suspension systems (Like the 124's (500E/E500 - E60's) 140's 129's 215's & others)
Hope this help

No. the factory MB tranny oil are designed to provide "traction" in the internal tranny bands & discs. In the sticker says: "For Automatic Trans"
The Hydraulic oil for suspension & steering are designed to protect the aluminum parts & mantain a very soft viscocity grade with the temp variation & not ruin the internal seals. In the sticker says: For Hydraulic units ZH-M
Generally, the Aftermarket oils are designed to work in anyway of the case u use (Like Mobil 1 Syntec ATF, if you read the stiker says: design to work with allisons transmitions, GM Mercon..,..,..,..,..,... etc & ANY assysted power steering.)

Rack and pinion,
Hi everyone,, I just bought my first E320 (1996) with only 103K miles, run like a dream but 600 miles later the Rack and Pinion start to leak real bad, dealer priced me at $1700.00 job,, I found a remanufactured unit on ebay and my local mechanic install it it for me ,, total cost was under $500.00 , when I packed the old rack and pinion to ship it for core refund, it was also remanufactured unit,
Now my question is,,, is the rack and pinion on this car a headache thing? is this a very likely common problem? the car has under 110K miles,,,, what do you people think? please advise..
Thanks all

Is not a headache, 100k miles fail is a common time/age to fail the internal seals (most in a 15 years old car).. is not a big problem really, with your remanufactured rack (if it is good quality remanufacturer) you have other 100k miles more for fun

2001 E55 AMG (sold)
I saw from the service records on my car that it needed a rack replacement back around 40-50k miles. I haven't really read about these cars having that problem, but I guess it does happen now and again.

sorry to tell you and I hope I am in fact wrong , but that " Might not be it " , it is 96 with 103K , and judging by the fact that you didnt know about the leaking steering boots , it didnt go through an inspection otherwise you would have known about it ...so things happen after 100K miles ... thats not a fault of the car or the car has "Headaches " ....it is simply age and mileage .

Very true, its 15 years old car...... a friend had Acura Legend 95 also had the same problem cost him $500 and the car died few months later.... something about engine overheated. Any car has their problem when comes age, you just simply has to fix this and that. Still much cheaper to buy a brand new car having 50% depreciation after 3 years. (IMO)

Rack and pinion guy...
I agree with all of you, nothing wrong with any of your point of views, but I like to add another piece of information which was the reason for buying 15 years Benz,, when I was a kid, I have seen Mercedes Taxis running allover and every one I knew swear by the benz,, most were Eclass 180 (back in mid 60's) and the average miles on each of these taxies were 300K miles and still kicking strong, was a dream to won one of these bullet prove cars and I got one now,, been driving it for over a month and amazed with how good of a ride, stable, quite, comfy and pick up speed anytime I push it,, I really love the car and hope it will hold with me for 300K miles and more,as I see, most of the 1996 Eclass were totally redesign to make better image and performance for the Mercedes company,, once again,, thank you all for your great help and inputs,, anytime I get across new issue I will post it right away.
Getting back to the headache as FABIO DANIEL stated is not a headache thing (OF the car) He meant is not a headache FOR YOU mantainin' an old car with normal problems. THANKS FOR THE ONES THAT MAKE LAUGH INVOLUNTARY, FORGIVE ME FOR BEING SO HAPPY
