1999 or 2002 E55?

Hi,

I found a couple E55's. One is private sales, 99 with 55,000 km.
The other is at a car store and it's 02 with 75,000 km but the cluster broken and shows only 15,000. Other things being equal which one would be a better buy? I have looked over the 02, whereas the 99 I only seen pictures. Are there significant changes between these years?

Currently I have a 04 Caddy CTS-V with 115,000 km. The E55 is bigger than the V. I am also considering a 02-03 C32. Test drove one today and it did not feel fast. The C32 is smaller than the V.

Opinions?

Well the facelift has some desirable improvements (and its prettier), but if I had to choose between a dodgy dealership hawked 2002 E55 and a private 1999 E55 (with decent service records I presume), I'd go with the 99 specimen. You could run carfaxes and PPIs on both.

I would go for 2002 instead 99. The 02 is last year of W210 should be more reliable and has more functions and the dash board has a bigger info center. Some minor changes and looks more updated.

Generally, the 02 will be better than a 99. It's newer, it has touch shift, steering wheel stereo buttons, and a redesign.

Are you saying the '02 has a broken odo, meaning it doesn't count miles, or just that the pixels are broken, so 75 looks like 15?

The C32 may have a defective intercooler pump (common issue). That would explain if it's slow, especially after repeat runs.

What country are you in? You used km, but the CTS-V is pretty rare outside the US, I thought.

Definitely 100% 2002 without question. build quality & reliability will definitely be better on the 2002 E55 for sure. Its the last of the old generation of AMGs, you won't regret getting it one bit. The only regret you will ever have is selling it (sadly I speak from experience). Just make sure you get it with the right options you like, be patient and look for the right one.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys. I am in Canada and the CTS-V is rare in my city. Yeah I will see if I can find the right one. If not, I am glad to keep mine.
