most common rust spots on E55?
i just bought a 2001 out of Des Moines, IA and surprisingly enough there's quite a bit of rust on the car.
how in the hell is this possible on a garaged car that is only 8yrs old and spent the first 2 yrs in CA?
so far i found rust on:
-rear trunk lid around lock(paint is bubbling)
-gas cap area(rock chip that started to rust)
-driver's side fender(will replace)
-passenger side rear door towards the bottom corner(this is the worst)
i only had a few minutes and i had to run but ill go have a better look tomorow.
WHERE ELSE SHOULD I LOOK? what are the common areas other than the ones i mentioned above?

All W210's tend to rust bad, especially ones that go through winters, we had a pretty bad winter this year and my rust just broke out on my 55, passenger side fender bubbled up around the wheel well, rear quarter panel around the wheel well, trunk around the key hole and another spot, bottom driver side door.. good thing I have a cheap body guy who will repaint most of the problem spots for $500 or so, but regardless its a shame that it happens on cars of this caliber, when 2001 civics never rust under similar conditions.

The reason W210s (and to some extent W208s) tend to rust is because they used a special kind of stretch steel in order to reduced weight. But in doing so it became more rust prone so it is important to keep rust at bay. The hood is also pretty common due to rock chips although it rarely gets out of hand. Usually you can just use touchup paint for rock chips on the hood around the headlights and that should be fine. The other areas under the car definitely need to be address though like around the rear wheel wells & etc.
It may be much easier to just go ahead and get the car repainted in its original OEM color so they can address everything at once. It may cost up to $1500-2000 but then you'd basically have a new car. Its up to you.

well i took another look today and sure enough both rear quarter panels are rusting in the wheel well area. it started on the inside of the panels but it seems to be spreading. also there's rust at the bottom of the doors in the corners.
these things rust like tin cans ... unbelievable. i'm going to make a decision here on what to do and i'll keep you updated. i'll throw up some pics when i get a chance.
thanks.
