Please remove Key warning.

Hello to all,
About a month ago my wife noticed that when she has removed the smart key from the ignition switch that the warning chime alerts her that the key is still in the ignition slot. since the car thinks that the key is still in the ignition you can not lock the doors. I saw that the key hole cover is is still oressed in after removing the key. I inserted the key and jiggled it then pullled it out and that seemed to release the key hole cover and everything was fine. It is now happening more frequently and I know that I can't spray a lubricant in that slot for fear of damaging it. Today it was stuck in and would not allow the key to turn. After fussing with it for ten minutes it freed its self and started.
What can I do? Can I remove the switch myself and some how clean it and if so, how?
I would appreciate any help.
By the way, it is a 2000 E320 4matic wagon with 112k mile.

I would post this in the non-AMG section. You're more likely to get help there.
