E55 vs E320 check this out!!
my friend told me he read in a road&track (i think it was that) that the E320 sport package handles better than a E55 AMG, hows that possible?

I don't think that is possible also. The E-class Sport package is only comestic and no modification to the suspension therefore it handle just like any other E-class.

The sport package includes the following:
Includes Bi-Xenon headlamps, headlamp washers, Black Birds Eye maple trim on doors, dash and center console, blue tinted glass, LED brake lights, sculpted side skirts, restyled front apron, rear apron, 17" sport wheels and P245/45R17 tires.
I seriously doubt that the xenons, maple trim, aprons and sport wheels will affect handling.
The tires on the E55 will be higher rated than the sport package tires.
Someone's very mistaken.

'06 ML500 w/Apperance pkg & '07 SL550 w/AMG pkg
You are leaving out one very important part of the Sport Pkg. It also includes the Airmatic II DC suspension. This will be standard equipment in the E55 with just a little AMG tweaking!! That is the reason most car magz. are stating that about the handling being similar.

Its only in the US and maybe Canada where Airmatic DC is part of the sports package (Avantgarde elsewhere) - For the Avantgarde models you get a regular sports suspension (Not air) ... However, you get the Air suspnesion with the E55 and 500 only elsewhere as standard. Just FYI.. I don't think However, that the handling of a regular vs AMG would be better.. No way. I have an Avantgarde with the sports suspension and 18" AMG wheels and it handles like a dream but I'm sure that the E55 will handle 10 times better.

Does your friend know the difference between handling and ride?

If you want complete luxury with supple comfortable ride you don't buy an E55.

Actually, it's the March '03 issue of Car&Driver that tested both the E55 and E320. The E55 pulled .83 g's and the E320 w/sport package pulled .84 g's. These were separate tests, so call them about even. (The E320 won the comparison test, with the BMW 530i coming in second, Audi A6 3rd, Lexus, Infinity, Lincoln, and the Jag bringing up the rears.)
BUT, the w210 E55 consitently pulls .90 g's on the skidpad. So I'm quite dissapointed with the .83 result of the new E55. I just don't get it either. Maybe the new E55 is just meant to be a land cruiser missle.

W211 E55AMG
The big reason for those w211 e55 skidpad numbers is rear tires. They are MO-marked (Mercedes Only) which means EXTREMELY soft sideline.
19" rims with Pirelli P-Zero Neros and the whole car is different

My guess is that the combination of weight (400lbs), air suspension and poor tires are causing the dismal numbers. I saw Continetal mentioned in more than one review instead of the more capable Michelin Pilots. That alone could be worth .05g

So, probably for those who will pretty soon have their W211 E55 ready for delivery, should consider paying
$76,000 base price
$-------- optional package
$ 600 rear tires
:-)

The Michelin Pilot Sport tires may not be the "grippiest" but they provide an excellent balance between wet/dry roadholding, ride, noise and wear. The first thing I did to my '99 E55 was put on a set of S02s. They wore out in 8K miles. I switched back to the Pilots and got 22K miles. I could have gone longer but I cut a sidewall and decided to replace them all. The difference in grip was barely noticable in street driving conditions.
Either tire will outperform the Continental if that is what was tested on the '03 E55. The choice boils down to how much are you willing to pay for that extra grip?
