E55 AMG motor ticks loudly
hey guys i bought a 1999 E55 AMG 2 months ago.. this is a great forum.
anyways, i noticed it makes this ticking noise (sounds like valves)...
its noticeable when you drive next to another car with your window rolled down and hear the sound bounce back..
inside parking garages, its even louder!! CH CH CH CH CH..
tick speeds up as you accelerate.. but sometimes will go away
is this normal or do i need to take it in and get it looked at? i remember reading somewhere that this is normal on the AMG engines.

Check the driver side. Is it louder there? Find the purge valve (see thread below) and see if that's what's making the ticking. If so, it's normal.

You might have a stuck valve or valve guide (can't remember). Had this problem on my W124 E420. They kept fixing it (at $500 bux a pop) but about a month after the fix, it would come right back. I ended up just "getting over it" as my mechanic didn't feel it was too devastating.

Nope! the E420 hs the M119 second gen & Yes, they have this problem.. some plastick guides blowns sometimes & you can hear a tickness cause one lifter don't charge oil.. but in the M113 (E55 W210) not use this guides.. this is not the problem. maybe a defective lifter for use. you can replace it the set.. is not too expensive & ypu can change only the one broken
Hope that help

I spoke to my mechanic about the ticking noises and he said the M113 sometimes experiences lifter and rocker issues. If this is the case, you want to get the ticking dealt with ASAP as continuing to run the car as-is will result in a beat up camshaft and higher repair costs.
I'd get this checked out fast.
