Where to "get into some trouble", without getting into trouble =)

Hi there - My E55 is the first real "performance" car I've owned. Prior to this, I had an excellent '98 BMW 323is. Because the BMW was a less powerful car, I was able to - lets say "explore the handling limits" on the open road, more so than the E55. With the Benz, I can't really begin pushing the car to it's limits, without atracting a whole lot of attention

I've never taken a racing course and because of this, I'm not looking to track the car, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions/experiences with finding places to "work out" their AMG. I'm really just looking for somewhere to get a feel for the car's thresholds, without the involvement of my friendly law-enforcement-types. Any ideas, experiences, etc?

the track IS the best place to "work out" your new car. It also has the added benifit of having an instructor sitting in the passenger seat. Find a track event in your area and go have some fun.

Yes, the track or look for autocrossing, or a drag strip, I go there all the time it is fun to beat rustangs, trans ams and camaros at the track, jaws dropping when they see your numbers. best of all no tickets!

Teflon, I also highly recommend a "controlled enviroment" to learn the E55 envelope. I came from a much slower can than your BMW into my 2000 W210. Within the first 3 weeks, I spun into a curb to the tune of $3.5k of suspension repair. It truly can be a beast, but what fun.

Off-track, the world is becoming a very boring place ...

There are some nice open roads in Nevada, but at least one has become so popular with car mag writers out of LA that it now has a semi-permament speed trap. Ditto for Utah, but the cops there just plain scare me -- even sitting still inside a McDonald's (blue-eyed, in-bred albinos that stroke their 357's more than a 14-year old that has gotten into daddy's Viagra).

FYI, Nevada cops all seem to have instant on radar. The California HP are cheap and/or lazy, and my V1 has more than paid for itself there. That said, I am still usually the guy doing 45 in a 45 on my way to work, with people blowing by me doing 58. An AMG seems to eliminate the need to prove anything.

A CLK55 is good for 150+, but 140 is the upper limit on anything but the very best of road surface. And I have yet to find anywhere off-track that one can go more than 5-10 minutes at 140. The good thing about my CLK55, and the E55 Kompressor I will probably replace it with, is that I would not hesitate to hand my 72 year old Mom the keys.
