The hidden removable security panel

Messing around with the Audio system of my 2000 E55 I discovered (news to me...) a little tiny button on the left side of the Tape Deck (with the door open), which if pushed releases the entire left keypad . It is a detachable pad you can take with you. It has "Security" written on the back wall. Interesting....just FYI. Cheers.

Security like no one can steal the key pad since it is removable, or security like a place where you can hide things after replacing the keypad?

I assume this is not possible with the Command unit?

good question

I believe it is "security" in the sense of discouraging theft.
If one breaks into our cars, looking at stealing the audio unit, and the left panel is not there, he/she would not be able to control the Radio, CD, Tape etc., functions, so what's the point of steeling it?
If functions as if it was a "detachable" face, but since the face is ocupied by the tape deck, MB decided to make the left panel detachable. Cheers.
