2000 e55 weird no crank
The car cranked and ran fine, one day had hot shutdown from what I'm assuming is a bad cps, tried to restart it and it cranked just fine, then quit cranking altogether. Battery voltage is fine, everything else in the car also works. When the key is put to position 2, the starter ticks for a half a second, just enough to verify it is training the engine a little by watching the belt move. When the key is turned beyond position 2 to the actual crank position, the engine doesn't crank. Pulled the starter out and checked the solenoid and that checked out OK, and the starter runs. the part that gets me is the fraction of a second that it tries to power the starter when you turn the key to position 2 (run, not crank). Any ideas?

The answer is in the question:CPS. Malfunctioning CPS crank cold, but fail hot. And, eventually fail all together. Replace it. Mine went out at 66K. Good luck.

Desired nailed it, cps won't cause a no crank issue. I had a hunch it was the passenger side k40, pulled it out and like I thought it was all corroded. Now that it runs, I can finish diag on this things other long list of issues

The Mercedes is a 1999 E320 with close to 90,000 miles on it. It has never failed to crank until last night. The battery is OK and the cranking belts turn but slower and then the cranking stops. What is likely the problem?
