Paid $690 for E55 trans selector assembly

I spilled coffee, after this the car would not even go into Drive. Several days later got it into 1st gear, drove short distance to repair shop.

The shifter assembly, part number 210-267-05-24 (listed on my invoice) was replaced. Got car back after 1 day. Just for that part, cost me $690. This was not done at the dealership.

Looked around today to verify this charge.

On Ebay - $468

importecautoparts $523 (list price $580)

bimmerspecialist.com - $542.99

Amazon - $567.90

For what it's worth, labor was $345

Any idea why I would have been charged this amount, when there are numerous sources that have it for less? I will speak to them after I get some info.

Not sure about the cost of the shifter assembly bu it sounds like you got KILLED on the labor. If it is anything like the W202 shifter assembly installation (which I am betting it is as it is basically the same shifter but NAG1 (with tip tronic) it takes about 20 minutes to swap the shifter assembly out.

Here is a video showing how:

Just kidding

Here is the video:

After you have the arm rest removed there are 4 bolts that hold the shifter in and a clip that links the shifter to the shift shaft. you could have the whole assembly removed and reinstalled in 40 minutes or so.

They don't buy parts online and have their own suppliers. I can get parts from Autohaus for barely over what my friend's shop pays for them.

Unless you bring your own parts (which a lot of shops won't let you do) or do all your own work, get used to it.

Your total bill was about $1k. That is about right for that repair at most shops. Certainly you can find the parts cheaper online, just like you can find a TV cheaper at Amazon than in a Best Buy retail store.
