"Service B Exceeded by 78400 Miles"
Looking at a 2000 E55, 165,000 miles. Service indicator showed 78,400 miles past due on service B. Car runs well, it's black with the two tone interior, navigation, multi-contour seats (not working). No service records. How big of a risk is purchasing this car do you think? Should I even spring for the PPI or walk away?
Car is priced about $3K below NADA value. Needs minor cosmetics but mechanically seems solid.

These cars really are pretty tough. I am sure you know what you could be getting into or you would not have posted. If you can do the work yourself then it may be worth the risk. If you need to use an indie or worst the dealer, then you need to stay away

Thanks for the response. I currently have a W211 E320, have been able to do basic repairs like the CPS and heater control valve. I understand the W210 is lots more DIY friendly. Guess I will check it over for rust and bite the bullet. Only thing better than a Mercedes Benz is two. And the E55 sure is a different beast from the E320.
Thanks again and thanks to everyone on this forum for the information you all share. A great resource.

I wouldn't touch it. I bought mine with no records and it cost a lot getting everything up to date. My roommate works at an indy and did all the work on the side as well. He said it would have been around $6,000 for what was done at shop price.
Where are you located and how much do you want to spend? Mine is going up for sale very soon, but I'll only deal locally. It has virtually no mechanical issues and just needs some cosmetic work.

If that particular car has been serviced by the owner or a shop that doesn't know how to reset the computer each time, that could explain the high miles accumulated on Service B.
Either way, unless you're mechanically inclined or you have a good shop to do work,I'd stay away.Like with any car that has this kind of mileage,be ready to put some money into it.
Get it for a really good price and then it might be worth it.

If it is that high mileage + abused by lack of service for 78k miles.
You could easily sink $6k - $13k into it, just catching up maintenance and resolving issues you won't notice until after you own it.
