Complete Audio swap
Thought I would share my audio set up.
Something to look at if your bored.
The Headunit, sort of a headunit....
Is this:

Very good specs.
This winter I am going to redo the mounting trim plate and try and get it to look like the wood on the dash.
Right now it's just 1/4 inch ply painted black.
Using the Apple cable to connect the analog outs of the Ipod to the EQ.

Does not use the headpone jack.
It bypasses the headphone amp and send the pre amp analog from the Ipod to the Autotek EQ.
So all the volume adjustments is done via the Autotek EQ.
The EQ is so easy to use. You can fine tune the sound to the type of music your listening to on the fly.
I also put a USB charger behind the dash. The USB charger is hardwired to the switched 12 volt.
No cradle for the Ipod.
Once I have chosen my playlist I just put the ipod back in the cubby hole and close the lid.
Don't know if this would work for a cell phone or not.
I don't own one so I can't test that out.
Yes, I don't own a cell phone.....
Amp...

Mounted it like the factory cd changer would be.
Need to cover the wood with black fabric to make it look more like factory.
Subwoofers...
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...e-SWR-8D4.html
Have 2 of them mounted free air to the rear deck via plywood adapters.
They sound great. Will move the hair on your head when cranked.
Rear speakers...

Almost dropped right into the Bose mounting baskets with just a little trimming.
Front Speakers....
http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com...osound-system/
The woofers were almost like they were made for the E55.
Very easy to install.
I put the tweets in the dash where the phone speakers were.
The factory grills fit perfectly over the tweets and felt.
The x-overs are mounted to plywood in the recessed area next to the spare tire on the passenger side.
I use the x-over adjustments on the amp to set the x-over freqs.
It sounds really really good.
Clear and detailed.

Function over form. It's in the trunk so it's not like they are very visible. Why didn't you replace the headunit? Basically, you just have sound coming from your ipod?

The first ply is cut to fit the factory hole.
The second ply is cut to fit the woofer.
The 2 are glued together then bolted to the deck from the top.
Looks bad but very solid and airtight.
Theres no easy way to mount the subs directly to the deck.
Going to cover them in black carpet the same time I cover the amp mount, hopefully this weekend.

The EQ sits where the headunit normally does.
The Ipod is connected to the EQ via RCA from the Ipod.
The EQ has 2 sets of RCA inputs.
I can't stand the ipod interfaces on single din head units.
Hard to see and if you have a lot of music hard to navigate.
The Ipod interface is pretty easy to use and see.
