Diagnostic code reader

I am looking for a tool to find out what's wrong with my e55. The car has no cel, but I would like to read the internal fault code (if any). I have spent the last couple hours to learn about different code readers, but there are too much info - star, OBDII, etc. etc.

Can I just buy a hand held OBD II reader (able to read generic (P0, P2, P3, and U0) and manufacturer specific (P1, P3,and U1) codes) to read and reset internal fault codes?

Thanks.

Why not get STAR/SDS with laptop, its more safe & series to get all kind of codes,

and you can access more functional with it....

I know the Star system is much more useful. However, I just want to read and reset the codes because my car is not running right. Just want to find a simple solution.

Thanks.

Have you tried doing a soft reset to see if that helps?

Do a search in this section and you should find the procedure. I haven't done it in awhile and can't remember it off the top of my head.

You could also disconnect the battery for 30 minutes or so.

That's called an ECU SNEAKY reset,

1) Turn the ignition key to the on (position 2), without starting the car.

2) Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold 10 seconds.

3) Turn the key to off position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

4) Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.

Just listen to Zayed,he knows what he's talking about.
What do you mean your car is not running right?
If the CEL is not on you won't find any codes to lead you in the right direction with generic scanners. If there are any faults stored, the only way to read them is using STAR with the under the hood connector. Forget about the OBD2 port in the driver's footwell.

Neato... how often should this be done? I feel like my vehicle drives great, no running issues.... should I do this as preventative maintenance?

Feel free to try a MODIS or similar shop-grade scanner that can read pending trouble codes. If you have friends at a local repair shop, they should own a shop-grade scanner and could easily pull any pending codes. However, these scanners are too pricey to buy yourself ($2k to 4k) so it seems this STAR system is the way to go.

No need a specific time to do this procedures, you can do it while after while,,

not importantly after every maintenance.....
