2000 E55 engine compartment rust through
Gents;
I have a major rust through in the engine compartment below the winshield fluid bottle and in the same place on the other side. This is bad enough that I can put most of my hand through the holes. I have to believe that living in Northern Illinois with the winter road salt is responsible for this in the main. I am the second owner and have maintained this car religiously. I love this thing and am planning on keeping it so a few questions please
Is this common, and what is a ballpark price for the fix if anyone knows?
After the fix, how can I keep it from happening again?
If anyone has any suggestions on who can do this in Chicagoland that would be welcome too. I currently work with a shop that specializes in MB, Porsche, BMW, Audi and Ferrari and they are excellent. However, I would like to get a second opinion because I know my wallet is going to catch fire on the price.

Rust is very common in the W210s. On an annual basis I rustproof the whole car ( undercarriage, lines, panels, doors.....)
