Gear Selecter Locked
Today, I was unable to shift from Park to reverse, or any other gear for that matter. I had to override the lock by using a ball point pin to trip the release. I have a 2001 E55 AMG, W210. It was in the 30's F last night and will be colder tonight. What do I need to do so the lock will release properly?
I did try to search and did not have any success. Perhaps I was using the wrong terms.

Try "brake light switch". Alternatively, it's a failure of the release mechanism in the shifter module. That repair is written up with photos also.
And look here:

Read the stickies.

The brake light switch has dual circuits. Brake lights are one. The other is tied into the circuitry that releases the shift lever.
Numerous posts on this subject and it is an inexpensive and quick swap if you read the FAQs. And there is a YouTube video showing how to repair a stuck shifter if it is not the switch.
