what do you think about this harmonic balancer ?

Long story short,

had some vibrations/shudder on idle, motor mounts bad, replaced. Also replaced to updated belt tensioner and idler pulley.

There is still some shudder type vibration during idle, infrequent, engine runs absolutely perfect besides this, and I doubt most people would even notice this.

Took a long hard look at the HB, see photos and video,,, is it behaving normally or should it be replaced ? Part was updated, so this would suggest there was some fault with the original one.
A new one is expensive, so I don't want to replace it unless it is a must.

I think your logic is misplaced---just because a part number is changed does not mean there was a fault with the older part!!

I would go back to a dealer and ask if there is a technical service bulletin related to your VIN and it's HB!

Thanks for your reply

It says in the epc that the old part must no longer be installed and we know that there were problems with the harmonic balancers of this time. The MB dealers in Sweden don't know anything about the these things.

sweden never had any lemon laws for cars or parts like in the US!
a partsnumber is replaced with a new one when an updated part is reliesed at the dealership
swedish dealerships knew jack shiet about these fawlty HB's

if you´re worried your HB is sick, replace it!!
when it's getting bad it's wobbling and shaking, rubber holds no vibrations.
if you drive toooooooo long with a bad HB and it breaks you might screw your engine badly!

SUBJECT: MODELS 129, 163, 202, 208 210 215, 220 WITH ENGINES 113,
MODEL YEARS 1998 – 2000;
REPLACE HARMONIC BALANCER PULLEY

Harmonic Balancer May Fail and Damage Timing Cover on Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG

The rubber bond in the harmonic balancer can decay, which causes the balancer to move and work its way toward the timing cover. If the balancer comes into contact with the timing cover while the engine is running, it will fracture and damage the cover and potentially other surrounding parts. The harmonic balancer should be inspected at every service.

MODEL YEAR 2001
INSPECT, IF NECESSARY REPLACE HARMONIC BALANCER PULLEY

This revised Service Campaign bulletin 2005020003 supercedes previously issued Service Campaign bulletin 2005020003 released in April 2005. It contains new and updated evaluation procedures and warranty information to allow the replacement of the timing case cover and oil pan under certain conditions. Please destroy all previous Service Campaign bulletin versions.

This Service Campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that due to a supplier quality problem the harmonic balancer pulley in certain model year 1998-2001 vehicles may, depending upon vehicle use characteristics, be subject to high under-hood temperatures that can, over a long period of time, cause it to deteriorate. Prior to a harmonic balancer pulley deteriorating to a point of affecting vehicle performance and drivability, it will create several different types of driver warnings such as noticeable engine vibrations. Affected vehicles will be checked and the harmonic balancer replaced, as required.
Note :Please note, due to the volume of affected vehicles, dealer capacity, and to maintain an adequate and uninterrupted parts supply, customer letters will be mailed in stages throughout the remainder of the year. The various stages of mailing will be based on available data concerning vehicle populations, network capacity, parts supply and other factors. Do not campaign vehicles unless the customer presents a campaign letter. Only in circumstances when the customer reports conditions arising from a deteriorating harmonic balancer or the dealer observes deterioration of the harmonic balancer during normal servicing of the vehicle should the harmonic balancer, in a vehicle not currently campaigned, be replaced. Future NetStar messages will inform dealers which customers will be receiving campaign letters. Please assure your customers who have inquiries concerning this campaign, but who have not yet received a customer letter, that they will receive a customer letter sometime later in the year.

Approximately 368,836 vehicles are affected.

Crank Position Sensor (CPS)
This will totally knock out the car. They're about $40 and can strand you anywhere. About 15-20 minutes replacement time. Dig through service records or ask the owner if it's ever been done - if it hasn't, JUST DO IT! Totally worth not getting stranded.
