something other than coolant in expansion tank
Hey all.
I have either oil or trans-fluid in expansion tank. not a lot only some dots. I checked the compression and got 150, 140, 140, 150 on bank one and similar numbers on bank two. The car has always had a sheen of oil in the belly pan when I changed the oil but not enough to trigger the 'add oil' dash warning. So I pulled the belly pan off and saw that more oil than usual seems to be starting from somewhere on the forward part of engine, and it seems to start kinda high.
Also I do not have unusually high coolant temps and the coolant does not smell of exhaust. I also do not have any water in oil or in trans-fluid.
So Since I do not think I have a blown head gasket where else in the car does oil or transmission fluid come close to coolant and is only separated by a seal or such, the oil cooler? trans cooler? does power steering have a cooler on this car?
Thanks

how long did you have this car?
did you buy it recently?
maybe previous owner was drunk and took a pee in the expansion tank?
or worst case scenario is you have a leak from engine, oil is sipping into exp. tank?
oil in water is not a good sign!

Ok so both the oil cooler and the transmission cooler use a heat heat exchangers that use coolant. So I guess I'll take a couple samples to have glycol tests done.

Have you tried pulling the hoses off the T fitting-smell/use a Q-tip in the hoses to see if there are any residuals.
Be very-very careful handling the T fitting. It is now somewhat brittle.
I broke mine by leaning on it and the Benz. Fella'scouldn't find a replacement unless you wish to by the T with the hose assembly.
I fabricated one I got from Canadian tire in the plumbing department for $2 bucks-and that's canadian dollars.
