2000 E55 transmission issue. stuck in gear/grinds shifts
W210 2000 E55 AMG
140K miles
722.6 transmission.
SYMPTOMS:
1) under normal city driving, transmission will grind 4th gear shift. low sound in cabin. I would describe it as the sound of a Harley loud motorcycle going by on the opposite side of the road, but not loud. radio and AC must be off to detect. It's very short. it lasts the duration the RPMs are dropping after releasing 3rd gear until 4th gear engages.
2) some dowshifts also grind.
3) often the transmission gets stuck in 3rd gear until i shut off and start the engine again.
CODES pulled from transmission(carsoft 7):
109 RPM sensor 3 defective
135 Communication with DME disturbed
109 starter closing contact without function/gearbox temp sensor defective
CHECKs
TCM has no trans fluid in it. connections clean and dry
transmission plug clean and dry outside (did not disconnect)
CONCLUSION:
per my research, I have decided to inspect/replace:
1) transmission conductor plate
2) transmission conductor plate plug and seal.
I have done much research and would also like to get a final opinion based on my specific scenario from all the helpful members of this forum.
ANY OPINIONS ON WHAT THE ISSUE MIGHT BE?
thank you in advance for your input.
Indy gave me a quote to replace conductor plate and plug plus diagnostics for $872. Im in the south Florida area.
Thats not bad, but im very mechanically inclined and am planing on doing the work myself. It adds up to $273 in parts/fluids and about 6 hours of a Sunday in the garage.
My biggest concern is the grinding on the 3->4 shifts. It's permanent after that last major slip trying to overtake. The only way it doesnt grind is if i take my foot off the pedal and shift the gear myself with no load on it.
Thanks for your input.
