722.628 used in --> W220 S600 and W215 CL600 with M137 N/A V12
722.643 used in --> anything with S/C M113 AMG Kompressor (W211, W215, W219, W220 and R230 - 55's)
722.636 used in --> anything with N/A M113 AMG (W203, W208, W209, W210, W215 and W220 - 55's)
The .628 is a V12 Transmission, it can fit the V8 Engines but the flange is different as far as i remember (110mm to 120mm) maybe it is the same inside but no quarentee!
The .636 was used on all the M113 V8 AMG with N/A Engines and Tiptronic. It has more clutches then the non-AMG Engine from the 430 and 500 engines, the .632. The N/A 55's without Tiptronic have the .624 Transmission.
The .643 is the first speedshift version for the V8 Kompressor Engines, but it needs a different TCU Software to work properly.
At last there is the .649 from the V12 BiTurbo Engines, also used in the CLK-DTM and SLR (there it is called .648) It is on any M275 V12 BiTurbo, no matter if it is a AMG, a Mercedes or a Maybach.

were 722.636 trannies only fitted to tiptronic cars?
my C43 is a non-tiptronic car with 1234-D-N-R-P gated shifter.
I recently bought an extra spare tranny, a low mileage tranny from a MY2000 E55AMG fitted with tiptronic.
If my stock 722.631 tranny goes wahnsinnig and screw up, my idea is to use the E55 tiptronic tranny on my non-tiptronic C43.
I will probably have to do some small tweaks when installing the E55 tranny on my c43 to cope with the footbrake harness from my stock 722.631 tranny.
but there is no problems to use the 722.636 on my c43 after some small fitting modification?

722.631 was only used in C43, no other car had this transmission.

thanx for your info.
there are people on this forum with c43's where the 722.631 tranny broke down and replacing old tranny with an e55 tiptronic tranny on their non-tiptronic C43 with gated shifter 1234-D-R-N-P.
If I understood them correct they didn't have any problems manual shifting all gears on their tranny.
Zayed from w202AMG section knows a lot about this as he has done some tranny swaps before
early non-tiptronic E55 AMG cars fitted with 722.624 trannies, the 722.624 tranny is it a stronger tranny than 722.631 fitted on C43?
do 722.624 trannies have more clutchpacks than 722.631 tranny?
there has been c43's having massive gearbox problems with the 722.631 trannies.
I guess I am still lucky not to have any issues as I do the recommended oil changes to protect my tranny from wear n tear

these are all transmissions based on the W5A580 gearboxconstruction, the 580 are the Nm the gearbox was oraginaly designed for. besides that it is also used in the 55's with supercharger that have 700Nm. The real world has shown that these transmissions are good for around 800-850Nm. Over that you´ll need the 722.649, based on the W5A900 design, its suitable for up to 1200Nm.
I have such a transmission in my W210 because i have 930Nm. It works fine.
i am not that good with the old gearboxes, my knowledge is all from the tiptronic generation ;-) but if zayed says so he might be correct as he has done a lot of modifications to 202's

W5A580 gearbox construction is rated @ 580NM but is also installed in the Supercharged 55AMG cars?
did MB factory down rate the torque NM on paper for the W5A580 transmission but in real life handles 700NM from Supercharged cars without problems?
lets wait and see what Mr. Zayed has to say if there is no specific problems fitting a tiptronic transmission on non-tiptronic C43 with small tweaks fitting tranny correct.
biggest problem would be if I can't manually shift between gears 1-4 -D and lock the tranny in P?

722.643 is a W5A580 gearbox rated 580Nm but the M113K Engines have 700Nm Output. The W5A900 Transmission where used in the V12 BiTurbo 600's with 800Nm Output

Any idea on what transmission was used on the 97 E50 AMGs M119? Or would that info be on the data card?
Cheers

Thank you Fabian.
That is what is on the data card, and the plethora of forum searches and discussions I am reading through at this time.

636 will fit perfectly,
as you know; tiptronic doesn't has release cable, have to plugged it out or hang it with zip tie..

What Kaype said made me a little confused if Kaype had the correct info regarding manual shifting in manual mode 1-2-3-4-D on my C43 fitted with the spare 722.636 tranny?
Wudd manual shifting work through gears 1-2-3-4-D if the 722.636 tranny is fitted to my car?
It wudd be a problem for me when I have bougth an extra spare 722.636 tiptronic tranny which is sitting in my garage and 722.636 tranny MAYBE will not work when I do manual shifting through 1-D gears with gated shifter??
Can you confirm there is NO problems with manual shifting 1-2-3-4-D when 722.636 tranny is fitted to my C43 with gated hifter?
Otherwise I have wasted my money on the wrong tranny.
Luckily my 631 tranny is still going strong without shifting problems, I don't know if this tranny will ever break?
I take the parklock reliese cable from 722.631 tranny, fit reliese cable to the 722.636 tranny with ziptie, then connect reliese cable plug to the electronics of my car, then 722.636 will work in PARK mode without problems?
Is this correct?
Thanx man

Bro.,
Fabian(Kaype) is better than me & master on these stuff for sure,
as i know; all about the TCU only for correcting shifting, especially with EGS51,
C43 got EGS51 with gate shifter, which doesn't has ESM module to control the shift point & through signals to ECU..!,,
that would means, all manual shifting from "1>>4D" should works fine..

if I remember correct, didn't you mention long time ago you had to replace the broken 722.631 C43 tranny with a 722.636 tranny from a 2001 E55 which was fitted to your C43 AMG?
I can't remember exactly, pliz refresh my memory.
how did the 722.636 tranny operate all these years you have owned your car?
good shifting without issues or bad shifting with issues?
did you experiance smooth or harsh shifting in D-mode?
manual shifting from 1st. gear up to D-mode, tranny shifts without issues?

For the most part the car shifts fine. On a fee occasions had some delays in shifts and for a short period of time at one point it had a hard shift from first to second but that went away.

did you replace any of your o2 sensors as you don't have any hard shifts anymore?
the delayed gear shifts you had, do you think they were caused from a bad MAF or old tranny oil not being changed?
you don't notice any gear shifting issues anymore do ya?
tranny is silky smooth now is it?

OK so if I'm reading this correctly, you replace a 98 - 99 E55 non-tiptronic tranny for a 2000-2002 tranny without issues?

the harsh shifts you had between 1st. and 2nd gear could be from a bad o2 sensor.
