e55 amg engine build

hi all
i purchased a 2001 e55 engine for the internals to put into my cls 500 and when i stripped the mot i found the ring lands on number 5 piston was broke , i read on the forum somewhere that they later went up half a point with the compression ratio to 11 to 1 , would that be the slk 55 pistons and would that account for the extra 10 hp on the slk or was it a combination of parts .
i have a pair of 2005 slk heads with low miles to go on once i build the bottom end , but as im now short of a piston im wondering if its worth looking at installing the newer style pistons .
any advice would be welcome.

JE pistons require you to install liners into the block , im not for spending that kind of money , id be happy with 400 hp at the crank

You can put coil overs on a W211. It's been done many, many times.

In 2004 the CLK55 and C55 received a CR bump to 11:1, and I assume that the internals were left alone for the '05 SLK. I am not sure if that CR increase was through pistons, thinner head gasket, or combustion chamber, but I'd likely chalk it up to pistons. The difference in HP among the three 2005 models was a function of exhaust routing, airbox and tuning. You can easily run these engines for up to 300K miles with proper care and, as you already know, a used bottom end can be had for cheap. A simple tune along with decent headers on any of the 5.4L M113s will net you 400HP. You can nickel plate the bores if you want to run JE or Weistec pistons, but that is still expensive and you loose some of the favorable wear properties of the factory cast-in bores.

the bottom end was cheap enough but it seems used pistons fetch good money
