Slow dying E55
I have owned this 99 E55 for about ten years. Put 100K+ on the car. Mileage now is 148K. For the past few months, the car has been losing power and has no CEL. Changed a number of parts trying to rectify the issue. For the past few weeks, there is tapping noise coming out from the driver side valve cover when starting. The noise dies down after a few minutes, but the noise has been getting worst. Researched and was told there could be lifter issue. Okay, bought a set of lifters and tried to change them this weekend.
After opened up the valve cover and removed the rocker arm, and found the following: (1) there is a deep score on the roller of one exhaust rocker; (2) there is a medium (?) score on one round section of the camshaft; and (3) deep score on the corresponding portion on the rocker arm assembly. Looked at them for an afternoon, and decided to change the lifters (because I bought them already) and closed it up. I suspect that the corresponding portion on the cylinder head is also scored.
Found some videos on youtube that the M113 engine might have problem with an oring on the oil pump, and it causes oil starvation. He pointed out that the engine has no oil pressure monitoring system.
The car has served me well for the past ten years. Changed oil every 5-6K with Rotella T6. Pretty well maintained. I still like the car, but it is time to move on. Maybe to cars4kid.
Learned a lot from this forum. Thanks everyone.
