2003 SL500 wheels on a 2001 E55?

The stock wheels on my 01 E55 were chromed when I bought it (second owner) . The chrome plating on the inside of the wheel is chipping off at the bead preventing a good seal. Options are to have a wheel shop machine the bead on all 4 or replace them. The oem chrome wheels on my wife's 1998 Ford Windstar I paid 6k for aren't having any problems. It ticks me off my E55 wheels can't perform equally. I've been searching the forums but can't find a definitive answer. Will the wheels below fit my car appropriately?

"2003 Mercedes Benz SL 500. They are factory takeoffs. Tires are Dunlop Sport 9000A's.. 245/45-18 fronts and 275/40-18 rears. The front rims are 18x8.5's with a 44 offset and the rears are 18x9.5's with a 46 offset. "

Thanks in advance,

Tim

If those are the correct specifications for the wheels/tires you are considering, then:

1) they are not from a 2003 SL500, or from ANY SL; it sounds like a 2003 S500 or CL500 (or similar chassis)

2) They will not fit by just bolting on. They will not fit properly by just adding spacers.

Mercedes Benz has a TSB as far back in 1991 that instructs dealers NOT to chrome their wheels (perhaps because of the alloys they use).

Wrong size tires on the takeoffs. You will rub. However, 10mm HUBCENTRIC spacers can help to get you by with the wheels (if with the right tires) to bring them to an acceptable 35mm offset. Just make sure your bolts have 20mm of shank length past the wheel pad and spacer.

The offset is acceptable but the bolt seat radius will be incorrect, as those wheels are probably designed for 14mm bolts.

Just for reference, all W220 S, W215 CL, R230 SL and the W211 E, use 14mm lug bolts on the factory wheels. Add to that list the new W219 CLS.

The usable length of the shank on the bolt is what changes, obviously dependent on the pad height wheel. Older MB stock wheels require a 40mm shank length, while the newer ones only require a mere 29mm.

Tire size in 18's on the R230 is 255/40-18 and 285/35-18. The offset varying anywhere from 25mmm to 32mm.

Tire size in 18's on the W211 is 245/40-18 and 265/35-18. The offsets varying from 31mm to 38mm.

The 2001 R129 SL uses 245/40-18 front, and 275/35-18 rear.

The 2003 W220 S Sport Package uses 245/45-18 front and 265/40-18 rear.

With the offset in the 40's, it does sound like it's from the W220 or W215.

You're correct, but I am wondering if you noticed that the subject of this thread was for fitment to a 2001 E55, which is a W210... that is, 12mm bolts?

My reference about "correct offset" was a response to your statement about using 10mm spacers to bring them to ET35... at which point, yes, the offset would be correct. But the lug size would be incorrect.
