First 1000-3000 check at the dealer, what is it for?

First 1000-3000 check at the dealer, what is it for?
I was reading the service manual (and was told) to bring the car in at 1000-3000 for a diagnostic check. Does anyone know what that is?
Do they check how you have been driving the car to establish a baseline for service, or to see if you have been driving the car too hard so they can give you a bad time later if you have problems?
I guess I am a conspiracy theorist...
