I have always found that driving the car like you stole it is the best way to break it in. Not only does the car feel more powerful later on after a few thousand miles, its more responsive, better fuel economy, and the seals within the engine are properly seated. I do this with every single car I have gotten, including the minivan.

I totally agree with this artical! its true. my team used to do this when I used to race motocross, after re building the top end between race weekends they would start the bike on the stand hold the throttle wide open in 1st gear and apply the rear brake for about 1 min maybe 1 1/2 min. I never seized a bike ever! and my stuff was set up as tight as can be for the most power. the motto was "if it doesn't break on the stand, it won't break in the race!"

I just have to ask...... Why would you put the faith of your 90K E55 engine in the hands of Master Mechanic who has broken in OVER 300 engines..... AMG built 20,000 last year.

This has been hotly debated. It is more than just the engine that needs to be broken in. You also have Trans and differential issues to deal with as well. Just ask a couple of SL65 and G55 owners that ignored this what happened to their differentials.

If MB goes through the effort of puting a sticker in the window then I say follow it. I MAY be missing 1 or 2 HP in the long run but with all the traction issues I have anyway who cares.

The only reason that I even dare post on this topic again is that I don't want new owners to be un-informed. Don't read articles like this without thinking about the potential issues. You car is not a race car (yet it might be faster ;-))

Enjoy

The example "in that guys favor is Gid-e-up....he is a huge fan of "break um in like you drive um" and his car pulled 517hp 100%. It was the higheast HP E55 Kleemann has ever dyno'd. Mine was pampered like a kitten for 1000miles (according to 1st owner) and WITH speedtuningusa.com ecu......490.

Go figure.

442 stock? What kind of dyno? We have dynod a couple of E55's in a row on a dynojet and have seen variations of 1 to 2 HP in the cars. I know of 4 that have been run on my dyno and all of them were between 413 and 416 RWHP uncorrected.

Of the four that I know of, three were broken in slowly and the one that was run hard from the beginning was the one that put down 413.

28 HP at the rear wheels above normal is incredible...... What numbers are you running at the track?

Enjoy

...b/c it's a liability for AMG to put into writing anything different. Instead, they will go on paper saying, "be safe for 1,000 miles and then gradually increase your throttle management." Why not play it safe for the public?

If you were ever to find an AMG engineer, get 'em drunk and behind closed doors and he'll tell the "real way" to break a new engine in. Drive it like ya stole it! That's what I did with my C55. I didn't out right abuse my car but did it methodically like it's suggested.
