What does this button do?

Maybe a stupid question, but curiosity has gotten the better of me. It's located on the floor behind the gas pedal.

What is its purpose? What does is do? (And, for Peter B, can it be chromed?)

Your pic is a little blurry Is that under the gas pedal? If so, it could be a "kickdown" button.

Well, I will chime in. I think it is the di-lithium crystal energizer to activate the warp drive. At least, that is what it does on my car. Or, it could be a transmission kickdown switch. In other words, I have no idea.

Passenger "Pee-in-your-pants" button. Only available on the E55.

Really, it is the kickdown button. When you push the gas pedal all the way down it tells you engine and transmission that you mean business.

Yes, it's under the gas pedal. When you "floor" the gas pedal, the back of the pedal would depress the button. I only noticed it because I was installing a new set of pedals. Sorry about the photo, but it was the only half-way decent one that I could muster.

I always assumed it was the "JESUS CHR*ST!!" button, 'cause every time I press it, my passengers always grab the Jesus handle. However, at least one passenger has actually peed her pants, so now, I dunno.

A lot of models have it. The first 500E/E500 models, 1980's 500/560 series and I'm sure others. It was a nice feeling to press the button and feel the car respond instantly with an explosion of forward accelleration!

To be honest, I'm rather confuse that some of you only found this out?

I thought the kickdown button has been around for quite a while in ALL mercedes range? I think it dates back more then 10 years already. I know one of my dad's ex S class luxobarge has it. That car is 1995! hmmmm

Notkts, nothing near NOS level unless you're driving a 65 hehehe. for a C180, the kickdown button feels like wind gush only lol

So did many American cars built since the late 60's. Anything with a GM TH350 for starters. The difference is that the "kickdown button" was on the throttle linkage under the hood instead.

I haven't seen an automatic car without that button. Isn't a standard feature of an automatic transmission?
