You know, I think the CLS V12, aka Brabus Rocket, is the new reigning king of fastest sedan... sorry to burst any E bubbles...

Brabus Rocket Becomes The World's Fastest Sedan
Posted June 27th, 2006 at 9:30 AM CST

While browsing our inbox this morning, we received an email from our good friend Vincent at Autoblog.nl, who graciously tipped us off to the fact that the Brabus' self-titled Rocket, a Mercedes CLS fitted with the 600-series' V12, has officially garnished the title of the world's fastest sedan.

During recent high speed testing, the Brabus Rocket, whose superbly-tuned V12 produces a power output of 730 hp / 537 kW and an electronically limited peak torque of 1,100 Nm at 2,100 RPM, registered a maximum velocity of... are you ready for this... 225.19 miles per hour.

Unbelievable.

In addition to its unholy top speed, the Brabus Rocket took a moment to flex it's acceleration haunches, registering a 0-62 mph time of 4.0 seconds, a 0-124 mph time of 10.5 seconds, and a 0-186 mph time of 29.5 seconds.

If you're interested, the Brabus Rocket is available, in limited quantities, from your local Brabus dealer. The price to attain such a vehicle, as one would expect, is slightly higher than that of a standard CLS, with the sticker checking in at a cool EUR 348,000, or approximately $436,879 USD.

A small price to pay to own such an astounding vehicle.

To learn more about the Brabus Rocket and the high speed testing, keep scrolling to see several photos of the event (all of which enlarge when you click them), followed by the official Brabus press release.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

BRABUS ROCKET - The World's Fastest Sedan

362.4 km/h: The BRABUS ROCKET, built in small-series production based on the Mercedes CLS series, is the world's fastest sedan. During test runs on the high-speed track in the southern Italian town of Nardo the 348,000-euro high-performance automobile improved upon the previous record of 350.2 km/h, held also by BRABUS with the E V12 Biturbo.

The heart of the new record car is the twin-turbo V12 engine from the latest Mercedes 600 models. It was fitted into the tight confines of the four-door with almost surgical precision. BRABUS (Brabus-Allee, D-46240 Bottrop, phone + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777-0, fax + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777 111, Internet www.brabus.com) increases displacement to 6,233 ccm with a special crankshaft, larger cylinder bore and forged pistons. In addition the engine is extensively modified internally: Airflow in both intake and outlet manifolds of both cylinder heads is optimized and sport camshafts are installed.

The BRABUS engine specialists further equip the engine with custom-developed larger turbochargers, a more efficient intercooling system and a stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with four exhaust pipes and low back-pressure metal catalysts. Newly programmed engine electronics orchestrate the perfect interaction of all new components and contribute not only to maximum power yield but also to meeting the latest EURO IV emission limits.

After the engine conversion, also available for all current Mercedes-Benz 600 and 65 models with twin-turbo V12 engine, the BRABUS S V12 S Biturbo engine is the most powerful TÜV-tested engine of German origin: The maximum power output of 730 hp / 537 kW is produced at
5,100 rpm. Peak torque is 1,320 Nm, but is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm, available from a low 2,100 rpm.

In addition to the top speed of 362.4 km/h, limited electronically for street-legal operation to 350 km/h, the BRABUS ROCKET also offers acceleration at the highest level: 0 ? 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds, 0 ? 200 km/h in 10.5 seconds, 0 ? 300 km/h in 29.5 seconds.

Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a modified five-speed automatic transmission and the BRABUS locking differential.

The BRABUS ROCKET engine and the entire drivetrain are operated with high-performance lubricants from technology partner ARAL.

Naturally the unique performance of the world's fastest sedan must be kept safely in check at all times. In order to do so BRABUS in cooperation with Bilstein has developed a custom-calibrated height-adjustable coil-over suspension with gas-pressure shocks for the ROCKET. The shocks feature six settings each for bound and rebound.

Maximum size and state-of-the-art materials characterize the BRABUS high-performance brake system of the ROCKET. The front axle features vented ceramic brake discs in size 375 x 36 mm and 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers. Vented and perforated steel discs in size 355 x 28 mm and 6-piston aluminum fixed calipers on the rear axle complete this efficient and strong brake system.

The giant size of the brake components and the enormous vehicle performance necessitate the use of BRABUS Monoblock VI or S light-alloy wheels with 19-inch diameter. BRABUS technology partner Yokohama made the record run possible with the help of its ADVAN high-performance tires. The perfect tire/wheel combination for the BRABUS ROCKET features 8.5Jx19 wheels in front with 255/35 ZR 19 tires and 10Jx19 rims with 285/30 ZR 19 tires on the rear axle.

Specifically for the ROCKET the BRABUS designers have developed a front apron with large air inlets for optimal airflow to radiator and oil coolers. Like all other BRABUS body components for the four-door the front spoiler received its final aerodynamic touches in the wind tunnel. It not only reduces lift on the front axle but also contributes to a further improved drag coefficient.

Its aerodynamic counterpart on the rear axle is the custom-developed BRABUS rear spoiler lip. It emphasizes the bow-shaped design of the rear and together with the front apron improves directional stability by minimizing aerodynamic lift.

Integrated lights are the main feature of the BRABUS rocker panels and rear apron. Pushing a button on the keyless-entry remote or pulling on a door handle activates five LED lights on either side and in the rear. They illuminate the ground on both sides and behind the vehicle for added user friendliness in the dark.

The BRABUS rear apron is the perfect stylish backdrop for the four tailpipes of the BRABUS high-performance brake system. Its integrated diffuser is also part of the refined BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement concept for the ROCKET.

The BRABUS ROCKET also meets the expectations of the most discriminating customers when it comes to the interior of one of the world's most exclusive automobiles. Soft and breathable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara are part of the exclusive BRABUS ambiance as an ergonomically shaped BRABUS sport steering wheel and the speedometer with 400-km/h scale.

For high-speed fans there is now the BRABUS polo shirt "Special High-Speed Testing Edition." The high-quality shirt is available in the BRABUS online shop at www.brabus.com in sizes S through XXL and costs 75 euros.

I would think so -- a bit of it is stuff that you can pick up at Brabus North America in a mod order. But Brabu$ sure does charge for them, and their installation!

Most of what was done to the car is entirely unique to the project. They did alot to everything because of the speeds that the car was intended to achieve; and of course they worked the exterior quite a bit - and the interior a whole bunch.

I pulled part of the original press release which describes quite a few of the mods from my folder:

The 2005 model year BRABUS E V12 Biturbo is powered by a BRABUS SV 12 increased*displacement engine, which is ‘surgically implanted’ into the confines of the E V12’s modified engine bay. The twin-turbo twelve-cylinder engine normally powers the current Mercedes 600 models. Installation of a new longer-stroke crankshaft milled from one piece, precision-balanced piston rods and larger pistons with correspondingly increased bore results in a displacement increase from normally 5.5 to 6.3 liters. In addition the BRABUS engine is modified with sport camshafts, re-machined cylinder heads, a stainless-steel high*performance exhaust with sport metal catalysts and four tailpipes, and with newly programmed engine electronics.

The engine of the BRABUS E V12 Biturbo delivers an enormous maximum power output of 640 hp / 471 kW at 5,100 rpm, and an even more impressive peak torque of 1,026 Nm (756.7 lb.-ft.) , available from a low 1,750 rpm.

The numbers turned in by the BRABUS E V12 Biturbo on the Nardo test track speak for themselves: In addition to reaching a top speed of 350.2 km/h the world’s fastest sedan also demonstrated excellent sprinter qualities: 4.5 seconds from von 0 - 100 km/h, 11.7 seconds from 0 - 200 km/h and 30.6 seconds to 300 km/h are unique for sedans.

To ensure optimal lubrication – an absolute must at this level of performance – the engine, the special five-speed automatic transmission and the BRABUS rear- axle locking differential are all operated exclusively with high-tech lubricants from BRABUS technology partner ARAL.

The enormous performance also necessitates the use of special tires: The multi-piece BRABUS Monoblock VI light-alloy wheels in sizes 8.5Jx19 on the front axle and 9.5Jx19 in the rear are shod with high-performance tires from BRABUS technology partner Pirelli in sizes 255/35 ZR 19 in front and 285/30 ZR 19 on the rear axle.

The suspension of the BRABUS E V12 Biturbo is sporty yet comfortable with a ride height lowered by some 30 millimeters compared to its production brethren. BRABUS sport sway bars support the sporty handling with excellent ride comfort and large safety reserves.

Naturally BRABUS also equips the new E V12 Biturbo with a special high-performance brake system. The system is calibrated to the electro-hydraulic SBC brake system of the E*Class. It consists of 375-millimeter (14.8 inches) ceramic discs with 12-piston aluminum calipers on the front axle and six-piston calipers on 355-millimeter (14.0 inches) vented and perforated steel discs in the rear.

Excellent aerodynamic properties are essential at the high speeds so effortlessly attained by the new BRABUS E V12 Biturbo. BRABUS conducted extensive wind tunnel testing to ensure highest aerodynamic efficiency: The BRABUS front bumper with integrated spoiler and carbon lip not only looks striking, it also reduces lift on the front axle, thus further optimizing directional stability at high speeds. Its aerodynamic counterpart in the rear is the BRABUS spoiler lip for the trunk lid, which noticeably reduces lift on the rear axle at high speeds.

The BRABUS side sills give the sedan a lower, sleeker appearance. They also come with another interesting feature: Pushing a button on the keyless-entry remote or pulling on the door handles activates entrance lights integrated into the underside of the sills. These lights illuminate the ground next to the vehicle and make entering and exiting the vehicle safer. The strikingly styled BRABUS rear apron rounds out the sporty yet elegant exterior design of the BRABUS E V12 Biturbo.

The ****pit of the BRABUS E V12 Biturbo exudes a special ambiance: The four-door is equipped with an exclusive BRABUS fully leather interior crafted from a combination of especially soft yet durable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara. Inserts made from genuine carbon in the dashboard, center console and door panels create a sporty feel. In addition the sedan can be equipped with a state-of-the-art BRABUS multimedia package with DVD player and LCD screens integrated into the back of the front headrests.

The BRABUS E V12 Biturbo is built in small-series production and starts at 298,000 Euros MSRP.

And like I have said - and posted - before: I was more than ready to part with the money for the car, but after I had traipsed merrily quite a ways down the fantasy path towards fulfillment, they informed me that they weren't actually going to produce the car for any customers, after all....

And I am still trying to get one....
