The annoucer pretty much wrapped up with the line of the year...

"Nice job AMG, now we can't wait for the SUPERCHARGED version"

***adding onto this***

Hey seriously, do you think that this will be the "base block" that AMG will build off of with forced induction motors? I would think you could easily get these up in the 650-700hp range...much easier than the 5.5 due to displacement alone.

I bet this will be it....unfortunately, there has to be a limit somewhere....a limit to what an automaker will put down to the street...I bet it's in the upper 600 range. Hope it never stops of course....hope 10 years from now we are modding and getting 950 outta the future AMG's.

Dammit, all this talk about the 6.3 motor makes it tougher on deciding whether to go through with my purchase of the CLS55.

I will only buy another kompressor engine if i'm going to mod the hell out of it, otherwise i would go with 6.3.....

adx,

the 6.3 would be a step backwards from the supercharged 55's.

The advantage they had over BMW was the power and the ability to screw more out of it.

Maybe I should go through with the CLS55 purchase and when the 6.3 motor comes out, trade in the E55 for it???

More power is good, less weight is better....

I hope not... I'd rather have less HP and less weight. AMG should try to come up with something like M3 CSL, which had a fantastic power/weight ratio. Engine power alone won't cut it!

SL 65 AMG and E63s AMG
I'm waiting for the SL63TT when the wifey needs a new one. Hopefully it won't carry the pricetag of the present SL65.

The most idiotic thing said in that article was in fact the last line "....can't wait for the supercharged version"

This engine was built to REPLACE the V8K not continue another supercharged legacy. I swear this complaining about inability to mod this engine is as similar to the possible reaction of BMW owners if BMW M goes turbo. Deal with it!

I have to agree with Bilal ... this in all liklihood will not be s/charged or turboed... I doubt the unit was engineered with this in mind. It is suppossed to be a high torque high revving unit... which it is - but not blown. Bit like saying you want to blow a M5 motor ... just doesn't add up in my view.

I have just ordered a E55 S/C after much deliberation over this motor. While I have obviously not driven the new 6.3L I cannot get over the S/C units dynamics - the torque is just emense and thats what I really enjoy. Although the new units dynamics are not bad torque-wise they don't stack up against the 5.4 S/C unit.

I have always loved the dynamics of blown engines - the surges of power are really thrilling.

Anyhow hope they don't retire the S/C unit altogether.

Rgds Steve

Steve and others, there will be Bi-Turbo version it has been confirmed. It will have a different cylinder angle and a displacement of 6.0L and will be a different block than this modified 6.3 unit. Who knows... 600-700hp?

Part of me can't help thinking how much that 6.0 V8 in N/A form will really suit the C/CLK/SLK....

PS: Congrats Steve!

2003 E55
The latest Australian 'Wheels' magazine - August 2005, talks about the "new" E class, w212, due 2009. It quotes the 6.3l engine at 426Kw (current E55 = 350 or 368Kw, depending who you believe).
They are fairly reliable. So must be forced induction somewhere, somehow.

Cheers
