E55 doesn't sound mean enough...

Hey All,

I'm at about 700 miles with my car and I am really feeling the need for a more throaty-deeper exhaust than the stock AMG.
Any suggestions? I heard the Eisenmann on the SL55 and it sounds pretty good.

What would I need to upgrade my current system? How much would it cost (approx.)? and would the ECU need to be re-programmed because of this?

Has anyone done an exhaust upgrade to their W211 55?

Thanks,

K

Get headers and the car sounds like a NASCAR on cold winter days and all other days people will stop and look when you hammer it

04E55,

Thanks for the info.
About headers, what would you recommend? How about ECU re-programming?

I would do a search and read up on the different tuners. I would suggest starting with EVOSport (Brad), Kleemann USA (Cory), and Renntech (Bob).

PM me if you want my opinions on my 6 months of researching before I did anything to my $90K sedan.

Good Luck

haters crazy
If you're looking for muscle car loud/rumble then go with eisenmann exhaust. It will gain little to no performance but definitely a sweet sound. Headers are more for performance than sound. Dont get me wrong, 04E55AMG's car definitely does not sound timid but an eisenmann would ROAR!

The Eisenmann will provide a nice deep rumble tone for the E55. Headers would generate a lot more power but will not open the sound up too much if used with stock mufflers IMO. Hope this helps.

I just get worried about the famous performace exhaust "ear rumble" in the cabin. With that much torque, when she is "chugging", I bet the rumble is pretty loud inside.

HEY, just had an idea. Mardeth put in the famous QTEC switch bypass....this thing is super cool. Regular sound, then at the flip of a switch, back resonator is bypassed and instant hotter sound.

Here is the post

Sound files: (they kinda suck, but gives you a little hint)

I am just about to get my baby back and she has a new full Brabus exhaust. The sound of it is perfect for the beast. It's a very low rumble at idle which "wakes up" under higher RPMs. I'll be posting pics & sound clips of the car once she's in my hands.

If someone can teach me how to put sound files up on the internet, I'll go do mine today. I have taken out my resonators and added borla race mufflers...

Can you take a pic of the underneath to show what the muffler mounting locations and tips look like???

I've been searching for a set of aftermarket mufflers to use.

I'm interested in the resonator delete option - comments, sound and pictures would be appreciated.

Exhaust

I put a couple Magnaflows on each side, distal to the resonator. At first I had just one, and it sounded great, but too much "drone" while I was driving, so I brought it back and they added another one on each side. Result is perfect IMO. Whole thing cost me about $850. I have a couple pics but I'm at work and the pics are at home. Let me know if you want to see them.

Benzoboi - Just record it as a mp3 and upload it to a server. Or if you email me the mp3, I can upload it to one of my sites for you.

I have resonator deletes, headers and an electronic cut out exhaust. With just deletes and headers I could barely tell a difference in the exhaust note.

The cut outs made a BIG difference in sound but I swear it feels like I have lost serious HP at low rpms...when in a contest of speed i always keep it closed. The drone is awful so I pretty much just use it for BMW intimidation and some nice WOT blasts.

I used the stock amg tips because my rear body kit already had the cut outs for it. I'll take pics when my brother returns my camera later on today...

vrus: Did you still want the Eisenmann exhaust? I know you asked for it, but it kinda fell through when I tried to make the W211 exhaust group buy.

Well.. I truly love the sound of it but I just refuse to pay $2,500 for 2 mufflers. If you have a good deal on a set or know of a second-hand set for sale, I will take them.

Thanks!

I don't blame ya man, I don't like to shell out that much either. If I see a set or somehow we get a better discount, I'll give you the heads up!

Which Borla race mufflers you have? (model number, name, etc) How much did you pay for them? If they sound awesome and don't cost me my leg maybe just an arm I don't mind just not my an arm and leg. I would love to hear a sound clip

I agree Victor. I would really love to throw the Eisenmann race on my car but spending that much on just mufflers is just too crazy for me. I think that much money can go to much more use in other departments of the car.

To tell you the truth houston I have no idea on the model number or the name. All I know that it's a borla race muffler. It isn't even meant for a mercedes. What I did was go to my friend and told him I wanted my car louder but didn't want to pay too much for a full out exhaust. He then told me he did another 55 with this setup and he said that I would love the sound. So I said lets do it. I loved it so much, I later called borla to find out if they had anything else for the car and they told me that they didn't have anything.
It costed me about 600. But to tell you the truth I really don't care if it wasn't meant for this car cause I have to say that the car does sound pretty sweet. Some of the socal guys know what I'm talkin about, they heard it. I'm gonna try to get a sound clip going on. Car has that deep muscle car vroom until about 2k rpm and as it goes up after that it quiets significantly.

I removed my resonators and secondary cats- the sound is great. No super droning noise in the cabin but when you step on it - the car screams. James55 and BenzoBoi both have heard it during lower RPM's as well as under WOT. Hopefully they can chime in.

I've personally heard both Vic and BenzoBoi's cars and they both mean business! The sound is deep and throaty but no too over droning. Just about right. Both sounds like a muscle car but with a touch of MB Class!
