Downforce - Rear deck spoilers
Does anybody know what downforce (=extra traction) we get from the various rear deck spoilers? I installed my BRABUS spoiler yesterday, and will test it at my favourite circuit next month, around Turn 1 at 110mph!
In 1999 Audi TT ran into trouble with their high speed stability on the new TTQuatro. After several deaths in Europe, when drivers span off the road at 100mph, Audi installed the little spoilers on the trunk of the post-2000 TT's, and retrofitted older cars, which fixed the problem. ESP helped too, no doubt!
Any data from BRABUS, Carlsson, Rennteche etc. would help. We are talking 100mph PLUS.
It does not do much at lower speeds, except, of course, when you go real slow, cruising the sunny boulevards and looking gooood...

Dang that's a mighty fine ***
As for the real world information is concerned, I think the Brabus rear deck makes the most difference because it has been wind tested upto 150mph IIRC on the EV12.
However, I'm not saying that other deck spoilers haven't. That's just one I know that has been tested.

I doubt anyone around here would know. the makers of these products are just making them to sell to people who want the look. but If your worried about down force I'm sure it must help some. you can get a lip spoiler for the front also. a tenth here and a tenth there helps! next thing you'll be racing that over weighted pig in the super touring class!!

BRABUS spoiler
Yes, I got it from Sharp Performance in Melbourne. They are the BRABUS agents. $1285.00 I think, delivered to your door. I got my panel shop to paint it to perfection (smooth as wet glass) for $150 and put it on myself.
I had quotes up to $480 to get it installed!

It's strapped with duck tape for 24 hours for 3M tape adhesive and polyurethane to go off. You just need to align it first, mark the trunk where it needs to sit with masking tape, peel of the backing, apply poly at intervals and stick. Then bind the ends with duck tape over the edge of the trunk lid.

yea the spolier is just for looks my dads M3 has it and we asked about it and we were told it does nothing. E class cars dont really make a ton of downforce or even a Ferrari 360 (i think a 360 only makes 180kg of downforce at like 160mph it was on topgear). the only way to make downforce is to get a wing and front spoiler.
but atleast the spoiler looks cool
btw... i am a big E55 fan and i want my dad to sell the M3 and get a E55

Why does a lip improve aerodynamics.
Why do the nipples on the Evo MR work as well.
Even the most subtle things can help with aerodynamics. I would not cross out the deck lid as helping with downforce.

No Usable Downforce
Rafal - I have seen no tech. info regarding the down force provided by any of the current rear wings. However, one comparison that might be useful, would be the rear wings used on the cars in "NASCAR". They look to be 4 to 5 inches tall and I would think you would have to put something that tall on your E55 to experience any beneficial down-force at the track. Not sure if the "LOOK" would be tolerable but the function would be there. It's tuff when you get close to the line that differentiates between a Street Car and a Race Car when it comes to Mods! - Bob

No Weight Please !!!
Weight in the trunk would not be good in the "CHANGING DIRECTION CATAGORY", however it would be good in the straight-A-ways. - Bob
