I say compare them next year with the new 6.3 and the CLS handling improvments. Lighter car...510 hp...and CLS handling on the E should at least put a smurk on the guys face.....at least we'll be a little closer to the M on the track.

Grrrrrrrrrr
Five years ago!!!!
The E55 rolled out in Fall 2003 and the M5 debuted in Spring 2005! And don't bring the argument that the engine was in the SL 55 in 2002 because it was NOT in the E55 until a year and a half later.
As for the 6.3, MB can put in a 7.3L and it wouldn't change the opinions of most journalists. This journalist isn't criticizing the awesome torque and power of the E55, but rather the sub par handling of the car. MB has never been able to equal the handling of a BMW. They are two different cars: MB is an ultra luxurious cruiser, while the BMW is a sportier ride with emphasis on the driveability of the car

Mez
Mez,
You forgot to mention the CLS 55 time of 1:26.9 (half a second slower than the M5)

IIRC, the E55 rolled out in late 2002 or early 2003 at the latest. If it had rolled out in fall 2003, the first model year would have been an '04.

To say it is not a sports car is true. To say that it can not be copared to a sports car is not.

I also just watched the CLS55 top gear review. Stig took the CLS55 around the track in 1:26.9

Mez

The M3 CSL was done at a wet and cold track with the R tires, and that is an awsome result.
R tires does NOT like it wet and cold combined.....
Normal temp and dry surface would probably make it severall seconds faster....

The 996 GT3 was also run in the wet, but that car had normal tires on that are much better on such condition, the GT3 was also the fastest wet times recorded when the test was done.

02 E55
Well M5 is a superb car that's for sure )).
But what's up with the tire squeal? I saw another video and this things squeals like battalion of pigs!
And engine sounds like bad Honda Civik engine.
Otherwise great car.

but in perfect I would buy both.

E55 has much more nice sounding engine. It doesn't squeal - it smokes em tires!

I saw couple of videos on racingflix.com where M5 acts as a chase car in Ferrari, Porchse e.t.c. drag racing and it is actually faster then those cars, looks very evil pulling away from them.
