After picking up the parts last week, I figured why not give it a shot and install it myself.
A quick trip to
http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/
gave me the instructions on how to do it ($20 or so).
Since I'm not an MB tech, it took me 3 hours, but once connected the iPod system works perfectly. I tested the other functions of the car (telephone, tire pressure, etc.) to see if I had screwed up any of the CAN devices and luckily I had not.
I have a few finishing touches left (cleaning up the trunk space), but otherwise I'm done. 3 hours is pretty expensive (usually I don't have spare time), but I found it very interesting to see how the dealership had setup other parts of my car as I ran the wires (loose bolts, loose grounds, some broken plastic snaps). If anyone is interested in doing it yourself and you have the time, go for it. Well worth the tuition of learning a little about my Beast.
And the sound is very nice and clean. I recommend putting playlists on the IPOD, otherwise you'll find yourself crashing into something as you try and pick songs to play.

I tried to get the kit installed in my '04 car with an '05 EURO headunit. The dealer said they could do it, but since it's not pre-wired, it would be over $1400 just for labor. Does anyone know where I can get directions for the install and have my dealer reprogram later?
Thanks,
Chris

RAB Motors: Typical Arrogance!
Unbelievable!
I live in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. I have tried -- repeatedly -- doing business with these people. They are, without a doubt, the most arrogant people I've ever dealt with. Besides the overall attitude (one that conveys how lucky I am to breathe the air in their dealership) they figure that if you own one of these precious cars you can afford to pay through the nose. So, in addition to $299 for the iPod Kit, they refuse to charge one penny less than $140/hr X 4-hour install = $859... BEFORE TAX! I have tried buying cars through them, but this is the last straw. They will NEVER get my business; I'll drive an extra hour to avoid these clowns...

Bay Area Dealers
A quick update:
RAB Motors, San Rafael: Quotes 4 hours FIXED for iPod install @ $140/hr
Mercedes/Oakland: Quotes 1 hour install; worst case is 1.20 @ $120/hr
Smothers, Santa Rosa: Quotes 1.30 worst case install @ $110/hr
I have repeatedly tried to buy and have my cars serviced at RAB; this kind of thing always drives me away. These are the kind of people that MBNA should eradicate, as they give Mercedes-Benz a very bad name and reputation. Consistently overcharging on service to this degree should have serious repurcussions for dealers...

'03 C32 Black
I've got an '03 C32 and was told by MB that my car is incompatible for their iPod kit. MB didn't make the kit available for cars older than 2004.
Does anyone know of a good aftermarket iPod kit? I'm dying to get something as my aux connection out of the glove bix sucks (I only get sound out of the left speakers and have tried 3 different wires)

Scorchie just did the iPod install in my '04 E500 last week, and I couldn't be happer with it. Pretty cool to see the MB logo popup on the iPod screen. I do miss using the wheel on the iPod to quickly scroll thru the thousands of songs, though. Using the steering wheel buttons, it takes longer to do this, so I mostly just use the Playlists to change songs. Between this and the Sirius sat radio, I hardly ever listen to regular FM radio anymore.
