Stalling problem resolved (hopefully)

The tech guy drove the car for 20+ miles in a hot day like today and fortunately the car stalled after he drove it back and tried to start the car again. According to the service advisor the crank sensor was bad and needed to be replaced. I told him that someone from this forum had the crank sensor replaced but it stalled again afterwords but he still insisted it might have been the crank sensor as they're are sensitive to heat which is why it happens in hot days only and when the car is hot. Not sure if I should believe it or not but he might have a point. Knowing that our cars have heating problems I'll start looking around for some cooling upgrades hoping to completely eleminate the stalling :v

Doubt it. I had my cam sensor replaced...and it happened to me again on a hot day. After that occurence, it happened only again, in a hot day in traffic, before bringing it back to service. You mean to tell me the cam sensor was bad, but nothing happened all this time? Im pretty confident it's something else.

A neighbor of mine had his E55 stall while pulling into the service bay at Laguna Niguel. They replaced his cam sensor, fuel pump and speed sensor. He says it works fine since then.

Had my crank sensor replaced and after several months it stalled again. Car is going in for D service in 1,000 miles and I will ask them to change it again.

update

Got a call from my service advisor this afternoon and was told the fuel pump needs to be replaced as well because it was acting up. I'm so happy my car stalled when he test drove it and now I'm getting new parts

Its most definitely the crank sensor(L5)... The cam sensor will not usually cause the car to stall, you can actually run the engine with it completely unplugged. It can cause the car to not start, but it will throw a fault code. If the crankshaft position sensor fails while you are driving(most likely cruising at low speeds or driving through a parking lot after a good little trip), it will not throw a fault code or a check engine light. If the fuel pump fails while the engine is running, you will notice the engine run rougher and stall after a few seconds because of the drop in fuel pressure to the rail(which does not happen instantly) This will cause the ME control unit to set misfire codes. The dealer should have the latest and greatest crankshaft sensor to put in your car. The AMG engineers knew the kompressor engine would create a lot of heat and the crank sensor/plug connection on these cars is shielded by a black cloth type insulation. Unfortunately, a few of them are still creating problems. The engine is a beast, hard to tame almost 500 factory HP.

I have the same problem when driving my car during heavy traffic the rev seems to drop lower than usual as if it’s going to stall but kicks back in. sometimes I’m unlucky and the rev doesn’t kick back in and stalls. I took it to the dealer two weeks ago they said it was a problem with the ECU and they updated. Sadly, it stalled on me yesterday. Has anyone solved the problem yet? and if you did what was the problem?

Did they change your crank sensor?

Tell them to check your car's fuel pump relay. They found a burnt circuit and they placed a special order for a brand new pump relay and replaced it. They also replaced the crank sensor. Ever since it never stalled again but I'll see what happens when summer comes and i drive it in hot weather and heavy traffic.

Who was the service advisor. I've had several of the techs and supervisor check my car-they can't duplicate it. My car still stalls.

Thank you very much

CLK 500
I have a 2004 CLK 500. I was driving at about 70mph, the car just died and will now turn over but will not start. Changed the crankshaft positioning sensor, still won't start. I don't want to just keep throwing parts at it and receiving the same results. Any other ideas? I have had no other problems with this car until now

you should start a new thread...but have you checked your fuel pressure? I am assuming the clk500 has the same basic fuel system, so that would be the best place to start.

Crank sensor check... Spin the engine over on the key ,do you see any movement on your rev counter if you say yes , you do , then its not your crank sensor.

You should start a new thread, however check for fuel pressure. On the fuel rail there is a plastic cap with a shrader valve under it. If you don't have a gauge, you should be able to push the valve with a screw driver and a significant amount of fuel should spray out. Like almost spray you in the face amount. Not a little spurt or trickle. Faulty fuel pumps are not uncommon on mb's that are 10 or so years old.
