drive em like you stole em

Long break ins was a big deal maybe 20/30 years ago when technologically manufacturers did not have todays more consistent metal alloys and they did not have the computer programs to exactly measure tolerances of all moving parts like they have today. In addition the cpu's in todays cars have red lines well within bounds of the engines running consistent reliability.
AMG driving schools at the tracks take brand new never driven vehicles out of the trailers and "drive them like they stole em" for two or three days at a time without problems all the time and I'm sure BMW does the same kind of programs.

I totaly agree! if a car is going to break, it will break anyway. those break in periods are bull **** warranty loop holes for the manufacture to fuc%^&% you if they want, when something breaks.

Breaking in engines is indeed controversial - I happen to think this guy is onto something:

Derek, if you want really good times, ditch the Conti tires. The Pirelli Pzero Corsa's that are on the M6 are probably the best. For street tires, use the Michelin PS2's. I put a set of the Michelins on my M5 and they are terrific. The Conti's just don't have the traction, and you won't get anywhere near the best launch.

2005 Brilliant Silver E55
When we hit the track, a stock E55 with Conti's was getting sub 1.9 on his 60' times. The PS2's were about equal.

I never liked the PS2's because they tremble the car on every car I've owned.

Not to ruin a party but do you really think that a guy that runs 11.13 @ 128.9 mph and considered North America's fastest AMG really run on conti's?

And for everyone else that objects to Derek's doings to his vehicle-don't you think he that he is where he is because of what he's been doing. I think he knows all the ins and outs and is aware of all the wooos. Let's sit back and soon to enjoy the nice vids he's about to offer and be thankful we get to see first hand of the vids he's producing for us to share.

Have a good one Derek and I know you'll make the most of your M and make the enjoyable.

-waiting on vids.-

when i asked my bmw service guy if i could drive the car hard since i passed the 1,500 mile mark on the M3 he said "their really isnt a break in period they are pre broken in at the factory, the break in rules mainly apply to manual cars so their clutch wear patters break in properly. he also said their was really no way to make anyone follow it and they cant void your warranty for not following their advice.

Stay tuned for videos and timeslips (Yes, the E will be there as well). Let the games begin.
Did you get it yet??? Waiting to hear your thoughts about the car. Let us know as soon as you drive this thing.

In November. Motor magazine (Australia).
The M5 trapped at 192.5km/h (about 120mph)
The CLS 55 at 189.2km/h.

Very little difference.

They used launch control in the M5 and had repeated clutch over heating - it took 45mins for them to do 4 runs. The CLS55 did them 1,2,3,4 bang, bang, bang.
In p400 mode in the M5 its 0-62mph time is 6 seconds.
They also point out that the CLS55 could catch the M5 if it was off the boil.

Its a good read.

Everybody can use a little help, especially with a car like the M5. The M5 is a different beast.

The M5 Contis have a very high load rating, 710 kg front, 775 kg rear, there are only two decent tires that fit specs for the stock wheels other than the Contis, that's the Pirelli Corsas and the Michelin PS2's. The M6 comes with the Corsas. The M5 cut almost 10 seconds off it's 'ring time with the Corsas over the Contis. If you want the Michelins in 19" size, you'll have to order them from Europe. Not available in the US. They definitely have better dry and wet traction than the Contis. The OEM 19" rims are fairly heavy, I went with lighter 20" rims, and the Michelin PS2's are available in that size in the US. I'd definitely go with the Corsas for best track performance though.

Car arrives tomorrow at noon, sorry for not being more clear.

Chappy and Amen, come on down. We have the track privately for the first few hours to ourselves which included Sonny's BBQ. Our group is Tallahassee Musclecar and if you want to get in before 1PM on Sunday, tell me how many tickets you need and I'll take care of it. Without a ticket, you can't get in until later.

Thanks for the tips Wolverine. I run 16" MT Street Radials on CCW wheels for the E55 at the track. I have gone through 4 sets of PS2's for the E on the street in the last 13 months and just put on the Pirelli PZero Corsas. The Noble is on PS2's in order to get ready for the One Lap of America which requires street tires with a tread rating of 140 or higher.
