Hey,

My BMW dealer just called me with a black on black M5 with some good options, I am going on a test drive on Sat. I was wondering if you could let me know if the car has lived up to your expectations or would you reconsider your purchase. If you feel more comfortable having this conversation via PM, that’s fine., I just thought others may be in the same position.

Thanks in advance for any response

Sounds like a beautiful car. I would not reconsider. I like them both for different reasons. If I had to choose just one, it would be the more elegant, more comforable E55. But that's somewhat because I have a Noble for racing. Without having a racecar, I might choose the M5 so I could have a really nice 4 door sedan that can also do road courses.

thank you. I have a Z4 that I track and to be honest, I doubt the M5 could hang with that in the twisties, but I am thinking about it. I'll report back after my drive.

I think you need to test drive the M5 before making this statement. The M5 should run circles around the Z4 on any track. Sure, it is heavier etc etc, but it has TWO z4 engines in its bay (figuratively speaking)

I didn't say around the track, my friend, I said twisties. The Z4 with the sport package is 1200 pounds lighter and sticks to the road like glue. I have owned and driven many cool sports cars, and the Z4 is up there in regards to its ability to corner.

If you ever do a performance delivery and pick it up in Spartanburg, it is amazing to see two pros, one in an M3, the other in the Z4 and the Z4 gaining decent ground in every corner (only to lose it in the straights). A lot of people don't like the styling (I love it!) but the car can handle. I would imagine a comp package M3 or the CSL would be tougher to contend with, but physics tells me that the M5 will struggle with all 4 cars previously mentioned. I could be wrong, I'll drive it on Sat and see.

I have found I enjoy a lighter better handling car on the track to a heavy faster one; it is why I am considering the Noble route (don’t know if I track enough to justify it).

dr, your designo 55 is one of the nicest cars on the road, I think we forget because we have had our cars for a while now, though the m5 has a few performance advantages, I think it would be a mistake to spend the money on one. just my .02cents. but when you go test drive it, drive the crap out of it!!

Crowder, the Noble is amazing. I'll have it at VIR the first two weekends on December. Come down and go for a ride.

I know it's ugly, but there are many aspects of a car that are important to me. The MB is my first auto and I hate the sluchbox. My Z4 is SMGII, anyone that compares SMG to an Auto just shows they haven't ever driven it. My biggest debate here would be: getting the M5, or waiting for the M6 where I am already #1 on the list. I will own one of them, of this I have no doubt, but fear not, I agree with you on the beauty of the E and it's not going anywhere.

I'll be there December 3&4 and 10&11. The 10&11 is with Chin Motorsports which provides 5 1/2 hours of track time each day- amazing. I plan to bring the M5 as well. Just know that if you ride in the Noble, then you will want one. It is unreal on a track and still street legal.
