I wouldn't say the LSD is like having Quattro AWD, but it does help. Throw on a set of really nice studless snow tires, and you could survive a winter. Speaking of Quattro, why not just buy some mid-80's POS Audi Quattro for the winter and save your E55 from gravel and salt?
