Why Ok to jump but not to charge?
MB manual says that it is ok to jump a low battery but says not to put a charger on the E55 without unhooking the battery.
I have mine in storage and I want to put one of those trickle chargers on a timer that keeps the battery up while it is hooked up but after reading the manual I am wondering why it says not to charge when battery is hooked up?
All I could think of is to guard against some kind of high ambient voltage spike but a jump is putting a big load on the system where a battery charger is putting a very limited load so I am confused why MB says no charger?
Any ideas?

I also read that in the owners manual but decided to use a vector smart charger to trickle charge my battery. I have used it repeatedly without any ill effects. The charger goes through its cycle and automatically displays full charge. I have to do this sometimes when I go two to three weeks without driving my car.
In my opinion its a way of safe guarding themselves from damage caused by possible voltage spikes, since the factory voltage regulator is not operating when the car's ignition switch is off. Get a quality charger and you will be fine imho.
