2005 Flint Grey E55
Tint

I have a 05 Flint Grey E55 and have windows that came with the light blue, and thinking of getting them tinted. What percent do you guys recommend for the back and the front? Also are my windows just light blue or is there a tint on it that i have to peel off?

Thanks

The blue tint is acutally embedded in the glass.

Tint is something that really depends on your taste. I'm personally satisfied with 40% tint.

Is that all around your car? By any chance can you post some pictures on it?

I didn't do the front coz it's illegal here in MA.

I don't have pics right now and will probably have to wait for the weather to clear up here in Boston before I can take some serious pictures.

My 2006 E55 with 15% tint. Check with the installer about your state laws as to how dark you can legally go. The po-po can be real *****s with dark tint in many states. Also, 5% "limo" tint can make it very difficult to see out of your car at night. Another word of advice, if you get pulled over with dark tint, roll down all the windows before the cop approaches your car so he/she can see inside. It may get you a break from a ticket.

Also remember that your interior color will play a major factor with your decision. Darker colored interior will make the tint look darker.

That's the thing... I never understood if they could make you roll up your windows to get a read on the tint. Would it be entrapment or could you simply state that your window mechanism was broke? I've encountered this a few times and my most recent one was on Nov 11th for “Unsafe and Improper Vehicle Operation” However, It may be worth $70 to you if you really think that you need the privacy

My windows are tinted 15% all the way around. I have a black interior with the blue seat inserts. 15% seems to be a decent compromise...not too dark, but not too light. Hope this helps. Windows came tinted blue from the factory

AK, I have 30% reflective tint on my car. I really like that it maintained the factory blue tint, it's just a bit darker. It's not so dark that it bugs the police (here in MD, 35% is legal), but it blocks the sun and heat.

I did my wife's (recently sold) SL500 in the same tint and it ended up being a different color, since the SL didn't have the blue tint of my E55:

2005 Black/Black E55
I've gotten pulled over here in IL with my other car and the cop MADE me roll up the windows. He said " I know your windows are tinted, roll them up " and since it is illegal for any % of tint on the front windows, I had to go to court and show pics. Unluckily for me I got pulled over by the same cop a SECOND time after my court date and he said since I lied in court it could be a felony, blah blah blah....I took em off. But I've heard horror stories of cops taking their key to the window and scratching the tint so the driver is forced to remove it. In the end, I'm tinting the E in the spring, it looks so much better with blacked out windows, i'll take the risk. Does anyone have pics of a black car with mirror tints? I wonder how that looks...

2014 GL 350 on order
Owners: after seeing Wayne's result with his tint which btw accents and maintains the blue tint of our E55's it was 'no contest' on which vendor to go with. The product is made by llumar.com, its called the 'platinum plus 35' and has a lifetime warranty. Also it isnt a dyed film but rather a 'sputtered metal' film which is very efficient for uv/ir reflection and has that elegant, understated look that was critical for me on a vehicle of this class-Joker

Wouldn't that be vandalizing personal property? Even though it's illegal, the cops don't have rights to scratch the tint that you paid for.

Nope, its not vandalism because tint is illegal on the front windows, now, if the cop scratched up the back windows..that would be a different story.

So your saying that if you have illegal items on your car; a cop has the right to break them? Don't change any of the colored lens covers to clear or a cop may just break em, then write you a ticket for having a light out...
Trust me I know from years as a comercial driver; the worst a cop can do is red tag your vehicle (won't let you move from spot, until a tow truck arrives.) I doubt they would go that far over some tint though.

I don't think the cop has the right to scratch the tint, but he did pull out a razor and tell my friend to take off the tint right then and there, or else he's getting the ticket. Off came the tint, half an hour later the car was at the shop getting the front windows tinted :v

Nice of that cop to give your friend the option. Cause he was gonna have to take it off anyway.

Of a side note, anyone ever ridden with an off duty cop? I have a Oakland police woman in the family (she works graveyard and is still alive, thats saying somthing, considering her beat.) MAN, I guess they know they can get out of a ticket in most cases! We pull out of a driveway at a shopping center that is right turn only,,,well not if your a cop, thats right; left turn half way down the block in the wrong lane at WOT until the island ends and its back into the right lanes. Oh and she slows down then, (WOT is reserved for when traveling on the wrong side of the street.I guess.)
I'm not sure I'm comfortable with a woman having a license to drive that way, plus carry a gun!!!??? JK no offense to the women out there, I say that tounge in cheek.

My 2003 M3 Steel Grey is pretty similar to Flint Grey. It has 15% Llumar tint. No flaming for the BMW pics please, they are just for reference to this thread.

Hey Merc what Photoshop tool do you use to do that? I also did this in like 2 minutes but I just wanted to get an idea of what the E55 would look like without pillars...I kinda like it.
