Kleemann K2 installation begins

Well I dropped off my CLS55 w/030 to Chris Chapas @C2D in Tampa this morning to begin the Kleemann K2 and Kleemann I/C pump installation. Chris said the car will be completed by Sat AM.

This car has me sooooo excited, it's is freaking amazing and easily the best car I've driven. Reality still hasn't set in yet!!

A little background... The car is less than 2 weeks old and has 1450 miles. I had a predetermined plan to break this car in "MY WAY" "NOT" the factory way. It involves warming up the car for 4-5 minutes while still at the dealer's lot and drive straight to the hwy. Once on the HWY you beat the absolute living ***** out of the car BADLY. You do full throttle accelleration runs up the gears and then run down through the gears while engine breaking. You do this for a total of 50-60 miles right from the get-go. In between these runs up and down the gears you let the car cool for a couple minutes of regular driving. After the car is beggin for mercy you drive straight in to get the oil/filter changed. Repeat the above procedure again and change the oil a second time at 150 miles. Now drive her easy to complete the remaining break in to 1500 miles. FYI, the oil and filter looked like ****. Simply filthy with all sorts of stuff in there.

Back to Chris Chapas @C2D..

Chris Chapas told me that they are one of the largest Kleemann dealers in the US. They have done loads of E55's, SL55's and CLS55's. First up is get a baseline dyno run on my car to see where she is at.. I just called him up to ask how she did on the dyno pulls... He responded saying "simply unbelievable"!!! He said "I've NEVER seen another 55 car make this much power before in my life". He commented & said he just did one that made 404 rwhp and that's where most of them come in around that.

Ok so here's what he said my Dyno results came in at..

440 rwhp & 500 rwtq bone stock!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They made several pulls back to back and they were all right there!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like my method to madness really paid off, eh? I will be sure to post the dyno graphs as soon as he sends them to me.

To be continued...

That dyno is great. Your break-in method is scary. What do other people think of that? Have you always done it that way?

I've heard about that kind of break in method before, nice to see that it works. Hopefully it won't affect the engines longevity, but these days who keeps a car long enough for it to matter anyway!

Did you happen to read the break-in recommendation for the LSD?

You have big kahunas. I do remember some threads using the same or similar break-in methods. Keep us posted.

Great numbers!!! I break in EVERY car I get just like you. As soon as I drive it off the lot I drive it like I stole it. EVERY car I have done this to, they ran like raped apes. Break in the engine like the way you want it to perform. Keep us posted.

Grumpy,

Yes, in fact yes I did, buuuuuuuut you only have one shot and one shot only to seal the motor the right way.. But in the process, if the diff happens to fail, well, that's what warranties are for

I think the results pretty much speak for themselves.. After researching dyno results on these engines 440 rwhp seems to be right along side with the highest output 55K engines.. But the real kicker is the massive 500ft/lb of torque to the ground in a bone stock 55K engine which is simply unheard of..

I smoked the tires in the dealers parking lot hehehe. :v Then did an oil change a day or two later, even the SA commented that the oil was quite dirty as was the filter. The oil and filter still look good now at 2.5K miles.

Yes my sales rep was astonished at the power of the car. Needless to say I would have smoked them till they go bald.

No longer stock '06 E55, A3 3.2 Quattro, LRD4 HSE, R107 280SL
I guess a good guage to change oil in break in is to check out its colour ?

My 55 done 75 odd miles now with some decent pulls in 2nd and 3rd - not many in 1st yet.... Will get it on some longer full pulls over w/e and then mbe next week see how oil looks and have it changed.

BTW are you all using Mobil 1?

OK, but don't be surprised when your SA tells you that they can't honor the warranty because the clutches show signs of abuse and improper break-in.
It will be NO SOUP FOR YOU!

Yup, Mobil 1 0W-40 full synthetic with OEM filter.

To be honest the CLS55 feels stronger than the E55. I wish I had beaten the crap out of the E55 when I got it a bit more than I did.

those dyno numbers are almost unbelievable, don't seem to match your 111 mph trap speeds though.

Update..

Well, I picked up the car this evening and put about 200 stomping hard miles on it. The car feels VERY strong on the low end to midrange, just gobbs and gobbs of torque but midrange to top end does not feel good.

Ok, I finally saw the dyno sheets on the car. Bone stock this car put down 442.2 rwhp & 510.0 rwtq !!!!!!!!!! these are SAE corrected numbers. The HP & Torque curves looks very strong and linear and the fuel air mixture is pretty steady right around 12:1 & dipping to 11.4:1 up to 5100rpms and gently falling off above that.

Enter K2 & I/C pump mods 466.1 rwhp & 565.2 rwtq These are also SAE corrected numbers. Miserable HP gain but torque is definitely alot stronger.

Looking and comparing the dyno graphs tells a more complete story picture.

The K2 dyno HP and Torque graphs look absolutely horrible compared to the stock graphs. I'll see if I can get them scanned and posted so you can see what I mean. They look NOTHING like what other members post on this forum.

Basically, the computer tuning on this car is way off. The car is running pig rich, for example at 4700rpm the fuel air mixture dips so low that it is off the chart @about 9.7:1 and only pops back on the graph at 10.1:1 @5000rpms and then dissapears below completely.

All I can tell is they need to seriously re-work the programming for this car. I suspect this is the very first K2 CLS55 030 that Kleemann has done. The installer was told that Kleemann USA needed to contact their programmer because when the installer sent them the computer it was unlike what they normally see. I have no idea how to interpret what that means. All I know is it took a couple extra days to get my computer back from Kleemann USA.

Now get this, I also have a check engine light which came on after about 75 miles of driving and stays on all the time..

I am extremely dissappointed that Kleemann would actually send my installer the computer back with this abortion of a program running. How in the world could this program ever be right on ANY car w/K2 mods when it is so far out of wack on this K2 car??

From the way I see it the car would have done waaaaaay better just running the factory stock program with a nice little bump in timing and make adjustments from there.

So at this point I will sum up my Kleemann experience so far.. Kleemann headers are awesome - truly a work of art and at wide open throttle the sound is amazing. The pulley and I/C pump are awesome as well. These parts are VERY high quality indeed. The Installation and work from C2 Design is really outstanding. Props to Chris Chapas. But at this point the computer tuning that Kleemann sent is terrible in THIS car and leaves ALOT to be desired.

To be continued..

The problem is at the track with the heat soak the car is making a lot less power probably about 40 hp less. On the dyno the car is allowed to cool off with the aid of the fans.

Next time anyone dyno's make a real back to back pass and you will see what I'm talking about. The Iat's go up quite a bit, not high enough to disengage the blower but enough to kill significant power.

The reason we experience it more than others is the climate here in Florida.

When they did the before K2 & I/C pump dyno's they told me that all 3 runs were ontop of each other powerwise. They said no loss in power between runs when stock. I don't know how far apart the pulls were either. I only have one before and one after graph though and I wasn't there so I'm only taking the dyno shops word on it.
