2002 E55 Speaker question

Hi Everybody,

A few weeks ago I took my 2002, still under warranty, in for a shrill fan noise. The dealer fixed that. After I picked up the car, I gradually became aware that the audio system didn't sound as good. My wife even commented it sounded flat. I investigated with my ears and discovered that none of the four speakers mounted high in front make any sound at all.

I took the car back to the dealer, and was told that these speakers are only for the navigation, and not for audio. I just don't buy it! Am I crazy, or are the door mounted tweeters for audio or not?

Note there are six speakers up front. Two are down in the footwell on either side, those work fine. There are two more in the doors, mounted right where the side view mirrors are attached. There are two more in the dash, at the far left and right edges. I believe the door mounted tweeters are for audio and the dash mounted speakers are for the nav.

Please anyone with any 2002 E series stick your ear on the speaker and tell me which speakers are for audio.

Thanks a lot for the help!

Before you go crazy, enter the audio set up mode for your radio components. Each component, ie CD, Radio, Tape has to be set separately. Make sure, treble, bass, fader and balance are correctly set for each. Unplugging the radio for repair or testing will set all of them back to "0". After that start checking your speakers.

Ken, can you post some pictures of all these 6 upfront speaker locations you are speaking off? I did not know there were speakers in the footwells nor in the dash and the speaker enclosure shaped like a triangle near the outside rear view mirrors don't contain speakers on the Bose upgraded system I believe.

The lower front door speakers are usually not referred to as "footwell" but front door speakers.

I have a 2001 E55 and it was about 4 months ago I took mine into the dealer. I felt the stereo never sounded as good as my wifes BMW. I did the same thing. I didn't hear sound from the front-dash speakers or the small ones up high on the front doors. I took it in and thought I sovled the problems. After I came to pick it up the dealer told me one set is for navigation voice and the other is for Tele-Aid voice. Bummer.

Nevermind...

I would post pictures of the speakers if I still had the car. Yesterday I traded my 2002 for a 2006 E55! I'll post some photos of the new baby once I get her to a photogenic location. And it stops raining. I'm in Seattle now and it rains all day. Every day. For months.

Oh, the new car's speakers work just great!

If anybody sees my 2002 Tectite E55 with 47,200 miles on a lot somewhere it's a great car... no problems (other than those speakers).

Way to go Ken. Feed up with the speakers in you 02 E55 - buy a 06 E55? That sure solves the problem. I test drove a 2006 E55 and 2006 S65 this week. I think I will at least wait for the 2007 E63 and the mid model face lift upgrades.

Great, now I have guilt!

Well, I probably didn't get a great deal. I have a long history of not getting good deals on cars!

I got $34k in trade for my 2002, paid MSRP on the new one at $87k. It was the only 2006 they had, and it was fairly basic. I got the NAV, CD changer, Ipod kit. I tend not to use fancy options like Distronic or Parktronic and didn't want those options anyway.

I'll post pics and update my profile soon.

That seems like a low trade-in especially when I see 02 E55's on autotrader.com in CA for $48k! Did your 02 have Nav? Damn, my 02 will be worthless when I get ready to trade it.

No Xenon HID? If not, you will really miss that feature. No more high speed driving at night for you.
