Oil Consumption on BMW M5's
Hi All
I know I should post this on the M5 forum but I dont want to start any flame, so I thought I would ask it here as several of you guys have the M5 as well.
Can anyone explaing why BMW considers 1 quart of oil for every 5000 miles to be usual and expected oil consumption on the new M5? Note this excludes any VANOS line issues/loss.
This seems excessive to me - in the 9,000 miles on my E55 I didnt need any oil at all, adn I thrashed that car. Is it something to do with their engine design?
Really curious about this.....

Motor Design!
Never seen an M5 V10 Piston, however, if it is a short one, then the oil rings are probably very close or into the Piston pin area. Both being short and haveing the oil rings close or into the Piston Pin area will contribute to oil consumption.
It could also be Motor Harmonics causing the rings to flutter at certain RPMs, compromizing their sealing ability.
Now , all this is relative to the 55K motor, and I must say one quart every 5000 miles on a motor that has an 8,250 RPM Redline and puts out 100 HP per Liter is quite GOOD! - Bob

Ever own an RX-7? Those rotary engines consumed oil like it was free.

Both my E36 M3 And M332i consume oil.For some reason it's the nature of these cars.No black smoke as well,38k miles on one and 55k miles on the other by now.
