Question Ways to tune an E55

An expert advice is highly appreciated!!

I have just bought a 2005 E55 from a local MB dealer. Unfortunately, in Saudi Arabia, the place where I work, they do not have Brabus, Klemman or any other MB tuning company.

The local MB dealer suggested that they can send the computer board to AMG in Germany for reprogramming. This will reserve the warranty, add 30 hp and remove the limiter at a cost of US$ 2,800.

In the neighboring country, Bahrain, the MB dealer is also a dealer of Brabus. They asked for US$4800 for a K1 Package, which includes; reprogramming the board and replacing a pulley and a belt.

I am just looking for the simplest, cheapest and safest way to tune my black beast.

My two questions are:
1) Which pulley they going to replace and how this will influence the engine horse power? what the maximum speed the car can reach in this case?

2) What could go wrong if I go with AMG tuning, i.e., reprogramming without changing the pulley and the belt? what the maximum speed the car can reach in this case?

Talking 186 Mph!!!

Efifty5 - It sounds like maximum speed is your priority and in that case just changing the speed limiter would allow you to go 186 MPH. Now, if you want to arrive at your Max speed quicker then go with the ECU reprogramming and / or the larger crankshaft pulley.

In any case if you really are going to go 186 MPH then make sure your tires are rated for that much speed!!! ( "Y" Speed Rating = 186 MPH) There is no Tire that is manufactured and is DOT approved for speeds faster than 186 MPH.

The ECU reprogramming changes the ignition timing advance curve (more ignition timing advance) and the fuel curve. The larger crankshaft pulley turns the Supercharger faster and therefore forces more air into the motor, which will produce more HP. Both of these Mods. are safe for the Motor if Kleeman, Renntech, or Brabus Mods. are used and a competent installer is used.

Are there roads over there that are long enough and that are not to busy for that kind of speed? - Bob

Continental ContiSportContact 2 "VMax" tyres are good for 220mph... but only available in limited sizes... interstingly and curiously rated Z (more than 240km/h).

Otherwise 186mph (Y rated) is your limit!

They said that AMG would re-tune your ECU themselves??? I've never heard of this before. Maybe we can squeeze some more tuning options out of AMG if this is so...

Yes Bob, they have endless highways running through the extremely hot deserts. Last year I was doing 255 km/hr with my 2001 750iL BMW in a very hot day for a bout 10 min. I took it very slowly to that speed so my wife can not feel it. Then I covered the speed dial and asked her to guess the speed. She answered “As usual 200 km/hr”. When she saw the real speed she I begged me to slow down to 200 Km/hr. Some of the roads here are so laser-straight and perfectly plane.

Thanks for the information

when you have renntech tune your ecu its actually a AMG tune they send or get the mapping from AMG and it is registered to your car to keep warranty in good standing.

what's it cost fom AMG?

Thanks BMWeater - so are we saying here that AMG can easily add 25 BHP by their own remapping (albeit sold through Renntech) and this keeps the waranty intact. If so why can't they just do this at manufacture?

Regardless - what does it cost from AMG? (I presume then it has ALL the campaigns applied and is up to date in every way).

Really? I did not know that. That sounds very appetizing.

You can get those gains from remapping. The reason AMG doesn't do it off the line is that it is still a Mercedes. They worry about all "sub"-grades of gas, etc. If you mapped it to run the way we like it, then it will "ping" on less than ideal quality of gas.

Efifty5...

I think since you leave in KSA and gets quite HOT there...

It would be good idea to add EVO colling package...Will give around 15-20 HP and you car would run much cooler...

Cause with chip and pullies the Boost raised and temperature in manifolds rises as well...Running on a HOT day at max speed could be Dangereous with this set up...

All depnds on money you are ready to spend...
