A little off topic here but do you think the W211 E55AMG will be able to Smoke the next generation M5? I keep hearing of a V10? Sorry again I know it's not linked to the original post just curious!

no.. and it really sucks.. I am spending > $100,000 on a "sports car", and they offer squat.

In some ways BMW is a better company!!

At this point it's really hard to say with all the speculations of exactly what the new E60 M5 engine will have.

FACTS:
BMW 394hp, 368 lb-ft torque, 4100lb weight
Merc 354hp, 391 lb-ft torque, 3750lb weight
ONLY advantage of M5 is manual transmissionwith less transmission related power losses. With a PERFECT launch an M5 will JUST beat an E55 (.1-.2sec standing 1/4) as tested by virtually every car mag in the world. In the real world of roads with less than perfect traction, rolling starts etc the E55 is usually faster. I have three friends with M5's and I have only been beaten twice out of countless races.
I am not a Merc nut, but see far too much ill informed "opinion" doing the rounds on this subject.
By the way E55 usually beats 996 Porsche too.

Notice how the E55 was a full car length ahead of the M5 before the M5 was barely even off the line?
Combination of driver limitations and manual launch issues (?)

I know! Saw it and something didn't look right. It's kind of like when the C32 raced the E46 M3. The M3 left the C32 2-3 cars behind. I think it's because the C32 driver was using the gears and didn't put it on full auto???

I agree the driver of the M5 in the clip is a loser and the M5 should win when driven properly. My point is, in the real world the E55 performance is far more consistent and achievable. To get good performance from a standing start in an M5 needs skill. Out of 10 races with an M5 or 996, both of which are slightly quicker than the E55, I would win 8 times, because most drivers don't get perfect launches on their manuals, particularly on the street.

MBUSA AMG has started to offer driving classes. Remember this:

AMG CHALLENGE DRIVING EVENT - www.mbevents.com

This first offering is probably a test to gauge interest and if successful there will probably be more of them in the future.

With touchshift and speedshift in all Merc's, I see people using it wrong! They try to upshift right when the car hits redline. This is wrong. You are selecting the gear range and not the gear! If you select "3", gears 1-3 are available, not just 3rd. Therefore, the best launch for the C32 is to stick the car in "1", turn off ESP, brake torque to 1500 rpm, and let her rip.

It's so funny that some people cannot even drive an automatic correctly. Sheesh.

BTW, in a race between the C32 and M3, NIETHER car should pull 2 car lengths by the end of the 1/4 mile. I have had a M3 friend race another C32 and they were dead even.

When both cars are lining up the guy on the M5 doesn't seem to know he has to go for the two yellow lights on the top of the tree, look how he is instructed to move forward, it is obiously his first time to the track. It would've been a closer match if he had more experience at the track. Go E55!

If you REALLY saw that race you'd know that the dude in M5 was asleep at the wheel at the start, what was it that "amazed" you, how the M5 dude fell asleep at the start---at the moment of start the dude does not even have his hands on the steering wheel , for all I know he could have been ma stru bating in there if that is what you thought was amazing---than I'm with you, amazed dude.

He must have been thinking that all he has to do is just show up there. Just look how E55 dude pulled to the line and look at M5 clown all over the place.
