Update

The tech reset my trans adaptation values and I then went for a ride with the senior shop foreman and guess what, it barely made the sound, just like the 05 we drove. When we returned to the shop I told the tech and he could not believe either as he heard the thud many times when driving the car. We summized it was the trans readaptation that made it better; well, it's been about a week now and the thud is back in full volume only from time to time however but when it does it, it's always at the same deaccelration speeds/points. When I go for the 1000 mile I'll ask the foreman go for another ride and maybe it will make the sound and be loud enough; but from the responses I've got here it sounds like we all may have this very issue from time to time. I also have noticed the sound at slower speeds/down shift points while letting completly off the gas just as the car makes it's downshift. Maybe once I get past the 1000-1200 miles point and I can open her up I'll forget all about it

You seem to have lots of strange problems with your 55... You need to drive it harder so all of the weird issues wont show up anymore... :-)

Yes I think that will help for sure . I'm just the type of person that notices these unusual noises etc, and it looks like some other's here hear it too. So you've never heard this noise in your car or are the tunes always on?

RJC, if I understand you correctly, the dealer took another customers car out on a test run to try and prove/disprove your problem???

Please let me know who the dealer is so that I can take my car elsewhere.

I hope they fix your problem but not by taking my car out.

The other E55 needed to be road tested for another problem, so while it was out they checked it for the noise I've been hearing.

Service bulletin

Hello All,

There is a service bulletin on the humming exhaust system: s-49_10-08-feb04
Exhaust system-rattling/hissing/humming noises....

Mine drones at around 3000 rpm,....and around 1400 rpm's while cruising traffic in high gear...

No longer stock '06 E55, A3 3.2 Quattro, LRD4 HSE, R107 280SL
I thought this might be the lock up torque convertor releasing and engaging again ...?
